Welcome to the 2024 Beneteau 36.7 West Coast Championships at San Diego Yacht Club. The West Coast Champs have been featured annually at SDYC since 2004. This year’s competition will be held in conjunction with the Etchells Bill Bennett Cup, sailed in the Coronado Roads on March 16, 17. The regatta will be comprised of at least ten boats from Coronado, SDYC, Oceanside, Dana Point, Newport Beach, Long Beach and LA, with the possibility of boats chartered by members of the Chicago and Toronto fleets. The Beneteau 36.7 SoCal Fleet has a series of seven one-design high-point regattas annually and the West Coast Champs is the first regatta of the 2024 series.
The Beneteau 36.7 was designed by world class naval architect Bruce Farr and built in both France and South Carolina starting in 2001. 247 boats were built for the North American market. In addition to the SoCal Fleet, active one design fleets compete in Chicago and Toronto. There are clusters of 36.7’s competing in PHRF in New England, New York, Annapolis, Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Detroit, San Francisco and Seattle. The 36.7 is also known for plush cruising accomodations such as standing head room, stove, oven, 2 showers, swim ladder and 3 double bunks.
The regatta schedule will include social events in addition to competitive racing. An owner’s dinner party will kick off the weekend Friday, March 15, and then Saturday will be the SDYC annual St. Paddy’s Day party. A buffet and awards will conclude the regatta on Sunday.
The Beneteau 36.7 SoCal Fleet has seen a resurgence of experienced new owners from other fleets. Occasionally, if you’re lucky you can find a good quality pre-owned 36.7 through scuttlebutt or from South Coast Yachts, the largest Beneteau dealer in the US.
