By Casey Allocco & Jared Wohlgemuth | August 09, 2021

The Peruvian Brothers, Giuseppe and Mario Lanzone, joined us on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast the weekend of the World Avocado Cup to talk about their backgrounds on the water, their business in the food industry, their involvement in Avocado’s from Peru, and of course, the World Avocado Cup.

The conversation begins with Giuseppe giving a background of how the brother’s got started. While Mario was the captain of a boat in the Mediterranean, Giuseppe was rowing in the 2008 and 2021 Olympic Games for Team USA. They tell the story of their separate ways and how eventually when their lives aligned, they wanted to build something together.

Their wise mother suggested a food truck, therefore The Peruvian Brothers was born. The brothers talk about the beginning of their company and what it ended up growing to become.

From there, they transition into a discussion of how they ended up in the United States as young teenagers and some of their experiences in sailing. “Once a sailor, always a sailor,” they said. After a long hiatus on the boat, the first World Avocado Cup was their ticket back in the race.

The Peruvian Brothers are more than just a food business, but the two of them are also brand ambassadors of Avocados from Peru and have worked with the man behind the event, President and CEO of World Avocado Organization, Xavier Equihua, for many years on different opportunities. Similar to Equihua, the Giuseppe and Mario believe whole-heartedly in the benefits of Avocados.

The brothers then discuss what they love about the World Avocado Cup, from the racing, to the socials, to the friendship and camaraderie.

“It’s great to see all the sails up representing the different parts of the world where different avocados come from…and seeing a dream come to life.”

The two are excited to watch the event grow. To end the episode, Giuseppe and Mario give their life advice to continue swimming upstream towards your goals and to never be upset when you make a mistake.
