2025 J/22 Beer Can Series


La Playa

Thursday Nights, May 8 - September 4, 2025

The Beer Can Competitors Meeting will be Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 1700
on the Sail Wash Lawn by I Dock.

Registration opens Tuesday April 15, 2025, 6pm, first come, first served. The registration form will provide the option to join the J/22 fleet pending securing a race series admission.

 

Open Distance Series

  • Racing starts at 1500
  • Limited to 10 teams each week
  • This series will be scored independently of the La Playa series and separate trophies will be awarded for this division at the end of the year.
  • No racing May 29 or July 3.
  • Format is one long distance, approximately 2 mile race out of La Playa.
  • Series open to J/22 fleet member with no entry fee.

La Playa Series

  • Entries will be limited to 20 teams per night.
  • Silver Fleet Racing: Starts at 1700
  • Gold Fleet Racing: Starts approximately 1800
  • No racing May 29 or July 3.
  • Series entry fee $50. Series charter fee for non-J/22 fleet members: $200 for SDYC junior flag and $400 for SDYC flag members. Registration form will provide the option to join the J/22 fleet if registration is accepted.

OA holds the discretion to increase or decrease the number of teams/boats racing per evening with the goal of maximizing participation.

La Playa Series Format

Will be basically the same as last year. Teams will be split into Gold and Silver Fleets.

Silver Fleet will start at 1700 and race for approximately 1 hour. Gold Fleet will start immediately after Silver Fleet finishes, starting approximately at 1800, and race for approximately 1 hour.  Silver Fleet teams will rig, Gold Fleet teams will derig.

Each week the team in first in Silver Fleet will move to the Gold Fleet and the last team in the Gold Fleet will move to the Silver Fleet.

Silver Fleet competitors will do Race Committee for Gold Fleet, Gold Fleet competitors will do Race Committee for Silver Fleet. Race Committee duties will be assigned by Organizing Authority at least 3 days prior. Volunteers are always appreciated. This is a fun way to watch the other fleet race and learn about Race Committee duties.

Each week, all races in each Fleet will be tallied to determine placing by Fleet. Overall Week Race scoring will combine both Fleets’ placings. Weekly scoring is based on low point system. Series scoring is based on the US Sailing high-point percentage scoring system.

To ensure the maximum number of teams racing each week, no show teams are scored DNE (scored last and the week’s score is not excluded for series).
