The Class Breakdown

Five 3-hour classes over 5 consecutive weekends oriented to teach Adults (18 and over) the basic of sabot sailing or basics of sabot racing through lecture, practice, experienced volunteers and real hands-on experience.

Instructors, Coach boats with rescue abilities, and SSSS Fleet 2024 Membership and Activities are included. SDYC “Club Sabots” are available to use, or you may use your own.

The lessons learned here are transferable to other types of boats and sailing as well.

On a sabot, you are the captain and the crew

You will gain knowledge on how all the parts of the boat work together to make it go!

Beginning Sabots: is great for completely new sailors who have crewed, and those that would like a refresher.

Focus: Learn the skills and confidence to rig a sabot, launch it from the dock, get in, confidently and safely sail in the bay, return to the dock, get out of the boat, de-rig and return the boat to its place of storage. Student will be taught: boat rigging, safety equipment, basic points of sailing, steering, how to slow down, prevent capsize, avoid collision, basic sail trim, docking, balance, entry and exit of the boat, tacking and jibing, getting out of irons (getting in irons is self-taught), proper sitting position, communication, parts of the boat, 360 degree turn drills and most importantly a corinthian spirit.

Racing Sabots: is a great follow from Beginning Sabots or for a sailor that is interested in learning the basics of racing.

Focus: Learn the skills and confidence to race a Sabot, types of racecourses, Regatta/Series, race rules, scoring, start sequence, race starts, optimizing boat performance upwind/downwind, favored side of start line and race course, reading wind on water, sail trim, sailing the tell tails, weight position, gain tactical advantage and Corinthian Sailing Spirit.
