Thank you for choosing to sail in SDYC's Hot Rum Series. We have over 120 boats registered to sail on Saturday.

It is great to see so many sailors rejoining this iconic event. To prepare, please take a moment to review the Sailing Instructions for some of the little things that you might not remember… exactly.

Besides all the camaraderie onboard, remember that we need to be friends with everyone in the bay. We are racing in an industrial and military harbor. There are deep draft commercial and military vessels that can only operate within the channel, and most significantly, with limited ability to alter speed or course.

As we sail along the channel, it is important to stay well clear of those vessels, keeping in mind it is their perception of the situation that matters. When pilots of these inbound/outbound vessels are unsure of your intention (or question if you will get out of the way safely) they will sound 5 horns. That is notice for ANYONE near the channel and in front of the vessel to get out of the way aggressively. Please refer to SI 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 for consequences. But most importantly Sailing Instruction 1.8 gives you the means to get out of the way quickly by starting your engine and motor clear of the danger zone, provided in doing so, you gain no advantage on the course.

The Hot Rum competitors have a good track record of observing these precautions in the past and the Race Committee looks forward to this continued trend.

The Race Committee would also like to draw all competitor’s attention to the significant ebb current that will be flowing out the bay for the duration of each of the Hot Rum race days. We encourage competitors to take this into consideration when setting up for their start, and understand its effect as they return to finishing line.

Lastly, don’t forget to check in with the Check-In vessel located about 0.5 nm north of the actual start line. See SI section 8 – Check In for details.

Sail safe, sail fair, sail for fun.
