SDYC

This is a multi-level 29er clinic: both for sailors who are interested in gaining proficiency in the 29er for advanced teams to prepare for the Youth World Qualifiers.

COACHES:

Giselle Camet Nyenhuis has competed in the 1992 Olympics, won the Youth World Sailing Championships, won Silver at the Women’s Laser Radial World Championships twice, and has won five US Sailing National Championships. She’s coached sailors at world championships, as well as local clinics such as CISA and HPYS.

Campbell D'Eliscu started sailing when he was 7 years old racing sabots out of Newport Harbor Yacht Club. In 2013, he finished 10th at the 2013 29er World Championships with Connor Kelter.  He went on to win the 2015 ISSA Mallory Trophy with Newport Harbor High School and the 2016 ICSA Gill Coed Fleet Race Championship with Georgetown University.

Sterling Henken has coached novice to advanced sailors from all over the country in a variety of single and double handed classes since 2014. Alongside his coaching, Sterling has competed in the 29er class nationally and internationally, including three world championships. He also competed in high school and college sailing on the west coast, playing a vital role in his teams’ qualifications for numerous national championships. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2018 and earned his captain’s license, which he then applied to his work on boats in diverse locations spanning from Mexico to China. Today, Sterling works as an educator in Santa Barbara, specializing in supporting students with disabilities. His work as a teacher greatly informs and strengthens his delivery of information and creates a structured environment where sailors can hone their abilities and passion for the sport of sailing.

Antoine Screve is a two-time medalist in the 29er at World Sailing Youth Worlds (Silver and Bronze) and has twice won the US Youth Champs in the 29er. Antoine graduated from Stanford University in 2016 where he was an All-American Honorable Mention.

Depending on size of clinic and range of skill levels, we’ll hire additional coaches.

For sailors with a 29er:

You may register with a teammate or you can register solo and be paired with a teammate by the coaches.

For sailors needing use of an HPYS loaner boat:

You must register for the class individually but can put on the registration form if you have a preferred teammate. All these applications will be initially listed as “pending" to give the organizers time to ensure sufficient loaner boats and coaches. We may not be able to admit every applicant and will let sailors know if they have been accepted as soon as possible after the application deadline.

Application deadline is Wednesday February 22, 2023 at midnight.

Clinic cost is $200/sailor. Additional fee of $50/sailor for use of an HPYS loaner boat plus damage deposit.

Damage Deposit for teams using an HPYS loaner boat: any SDYC member who pays by club charge, we reserve the right to charge your member account a one-time fee of up to $250 for boat damage. For those paying by credit card, we reserve the right to re-charge your card a one-time fee of up to $250 for boat damage.

Safety: It is recommended that sailors wear a wetsuit and booties. Crews should have properly fitting trapeze harnesses. All sailors will need to wear a rash guard or pinnie over their trapeze harness and lifejacket to ensure that buckles are covered. A Fox40 whistle must be attached to your lifejacket.

Schedule: Saturday 10AM - 5PM and Sunday 10AM - 4PM. Pizza on Saturday during debrief.

Venue: SDYC

Gear: Be prepared to be on the water sailing for 4 to 5 hours. Bring appropriate gear including safety gear listed above plus dry bag with any extra gear and plenty of water and quick, healthy snacks to keep you going!
