New Years Day Race

Happy New Year!

Seriously, we hope this year is happy because the last one fell short. With that, we ask you to pay particular attention to a few things this year, because it is different than last…

For the race:

  1. There is an outgoing tide (ebb) all day (from approx. 9:45 am to 5:00 pm) and it falls almost 7’. That’s a lot of water going out to sea… please plan to hang back from the start line a little because the current will sweep you over otherwise. OCS is not the way to start the New Year.
  2. This is a ‘fleet start’ and there are very light winds forecast. This means you will have less room for maneuvers and reduced sail power to avoid being swept over the line by the current. So please be conservative and stay a little further from the start line that you might otherwise in the count down.
  3. We are running a new course – it is simpler (mostly out the bay and back) and doesn’t parade along the city front.
  4. If you don’t have a motor – please plan to at least carry a VHF radio in case you are becalmed and need assistance. Every boat in the event is essentially a support boat to each other. Racing Rules of Sailing #1 - Safety.

For the competitors:

  1. Read Amendment #1. Please abide by it. The RC is not a police force, but relies on the compliance and cooperation of competitors in each event. We are following guidance set by San Diego County Health and we believe is still in effect. Racing Rules of Sailing #4 - Acceptance of Rules (new rule #).
  2. There are no social events at SDYC and we encourage everyone to avoid gathering on the docks or ashore afterwards.

Be safe and be happy.
