Coronado Islands

There will be two significant changes to the Yvonka Overnight race this year.

  1. The destination will be Glorietta Bay in South San Diego Bay. The course will start in vicinity of SD 17 just off Shelter Island. It will run out to the bay entrance under Point Loma, then reverse course and run down to South Bay, eventually turning into Glorietta Bay for an overnight at anchor in the tranquil waters alongside the Coronado Municipal golf course and Coronado Yacht Club.
  2. The Race Committee Signal boat will not be Corinthian, and instead, the personal powerboat "42" belonging to Summer Greene, your PRO for the event. If you were sailing last year, you met Summer and her husband Ian who ran the event last year from Corinthian.

The reasons for these two changes are as follows:
The destination  changed due to a new law that came into effect this past January. Mexico decided to implement a 'Temporary Visa' for visitors 'at sea'. This was mostly targeted at the boat loads of fisherman that were catching fish in MX waters, for which Mexico got nothing. But to not seem like they were profiling an opportunity, and the way the law reads, all boats in Mexican waters are subject to the requirement to carry this visa. While they can be purchased at the nearby fisherman's landing, they are about $30 per person. The applicability of the visa is unclear. Some boats have reported no mention by boarding Mexican officials, while others have been issued a citation with directions to 'fix it' by purchasing a visa in TJ. Confusion reigns. While many sailboats have transited the area with no problems, anchoring overnight on their doorstep might be pushing the interpretation just a little too far. Not wishing to offer our regatta as an 'example to others' – we have decided to change the venue.

The Trotter/Greene's have generously agreed to use their boat since Corinthian has a broken port engine. The 'party' will more likely be a raft up (bring your fenders) and may even involve a traipse over to the Coronado Yacht Club bar… nothing official.
