Tad Lacey took time to chat with us during the International Masters Regatta to talk about his life of sailing on and off the water.
Tad came down from San Francisco to sail in the regatta. He and host Alli Bell talked about how he got into sailing in Lake Tahoe sailing a sailfish, growing up by SF Bay and the variety of boats he enjoyed sailing in his younger year.

Jeff and host All Bell start off the conversation by discussing some of his duties at the SDYC Waterfront Director. He touches on his responsibilities as regatta manager, the Junior Program, and his support to the Dockmaster’s office. From there, the two discuss the history of the Club and how long he’s been there, dating himself back to when the Spinnaker Room was the Coffee Shop. Alli Bell even jokes about him being here so long, he coached her as a kid.
Jeff reviews some of the regattas and events that take place here all year long and then Alli congratulates him on two recent awards: Southern California Yachting Association Mort Bloom Trophy and the San Diego Area Yacht Club John Rumsey Trophy.

SDYC’s Annie Gardner joined us on the Sailcast this week to talk about her decades of success in sailing and windsurfing, growing up as a woman in the sport, her most recent cruises around the world and her upcoming adventures.
The conversation kicks off with a short recap on the Vixen Cruise, which she attended this fall with host Alli Bell. Recently, Annie and her husband have been cruising around the whole, visiting a multitude of locations including France, Caribbean, Bahamas, East Coast, and more. Dave Abrams, the SDYC CUBAR chair, joins us on the Sailcast to talk about everything CUBAR after completing the event in recent weeks. Dave speaks about the logistics of the trip, the events along the way, charity work, and a little bit about his professional career.
Dave starts off the conversation telling host Alli Bell about what CUBAR is, some of the history of the event, and what his involvement in. He explains the lengthy process of putting it on, the planning that goes into it and the support that was needed. Also involved in the planning process is safety regulations, training weekends, manuals and marina and immigration coordination. Out of 42 applications, 24 were eligible and made the trip down the Mexican coast.

The conversation began with Drew explaining some of his first moments in sailing and why he was so interested in the sport, including growing up on the East Coast and being fascinated with the engineering of boats.
After graduating from MIT, Bruce Nelson offered Drew a job designing boats in San Diego. “I fell in love with the passion of wanting to be a yacht designer,” he said.
Drew and host Alli Bell talk about his new Melges 20, why he loves it and some of his first events and successes in it including Worlds. He tells stories of Worlds in San San Francisco, being coached by Vince Brun, and finishing 5th despite their light weight.

While Andy Roy was visiting from Canada for the International Masters Regatta, we got a chance to sit down with him on the SDYC Sailcast. After the recording, Andy and his team went on to finish first in the regatta. Andy talks about his history in sailing, Laser sailing, the America’s Cup, and Junior Sailing.
The conversation begins by discussing some of Andy’s background in the sailing world, focusing mostly on his love for Lasers and his experiences sailing around the world. Nico Landauer, recently Silver medalist in Kiteboarding at the Pan American Games, joins us on the Sailcast to discuss kiteboarding in the Pan Ams, trends in the industry, personal favorite spots to kiteboard, safety, and more.
The conversation begins by Nico telling us about his experiences at the Pan American Games in Peru, explaining that it’s similar to the Olympics, but a lot smaller. “Although, when you’re there it seems pretty big.” Nico was one of 10 kiteboarders participating in the games, representing Uruguay, where he was born.

JJ Fetter joins us on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast to discuss a variety of topics with our host, Alli Bell. JJ speaks about how she got into sailing, her successes throughout her career, including two Olympic medals, the importance of youth sailing, and the long history of Olympic success at SDYC.
The conversation starts with JJ telling us how she got into sailing, involving the SDYC junior program, sabots and several mentors. One of which was Dave Perry, who encouraged JJ to sail in a variety of other boats to keep growing. From there, JJ ventured to more East Coast regattas where she saw success in the sport at an early age.
JJ continues on to tell us about attending Yale and how her Olympic campaigning began. She discusses her two Olympic experiences in 1992 and 2000, the difference between both experiences, and where she was in life at the time – including having children).

Traci Miller joins us on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast to discuss a new, upcoming event at the San Diego Yacht Club: The Vixen Cruise.
Traci explains what the cruise is, an all-female version of what has previously been called the Stag Cruise, in honor of our second female commodore (but first in an odd year, when the cruise is typically held), Jerelyn Biehl.
Alli and Traci talk about some of their favorite parts of Catalina. Questions are answered on where the name came from, why this is such an exciting event, and what the schedule for the weekend is going to look like. She reviews some of the events and games that you can expect to see each day, the regatta that will be happening, and what you can work on to prepare for the fun weekend!
The two ladies go through the top five items in their packing list, the costume contest on Friday evening, and what to expect in the evenings. They cover where to get transportation, where to find out more information, opportunities around the Club to get more comfortable in the boat, and the explanation behind the image of the fox on the website.

SDYC’s Johannes McElvain and Alli Bell converse back and forth about the 2019 Transpac Race. Johannes and Alli talk about their boats, Cal Maritime and Hula Girl, stories of breaking boats, life on board, and their overall experience sailing from Long Beach to Hawaii.
This episode on the SDYC Sailcast starts with a brief discussion about how Johannes got into sailing, some reminiscing on his high school sailing and what he learned from his college team at Cal Maritime (the team he sailed with on Transpac). Being Johannes first ever Transpac (and Alli’s fourth), he explains some of the preparation and training they went through before setting off including practicing on the SoCal course and adding the finishing touches to the boat.

Ben Poucher, the National Director of Warrior Sailing, joins us on the Sailcast during his fifth year at SDYC for the Warrior Sailing Training Camp. Ben tells us what the organization is all about, how the week-long camp works, and why this event is so unique compared to other wounded veteran programs.
Ben starts by talking about what the camp entails, about the boats, and about some of the special equipment they use to accommodate wounded veterans. Warrior Sailing rarely uses clinical equipment. “It’s really a lot of veterans just helping each other,” Ben explains.
“It’s my favorite part of the week. Not necessary the sailing, but getting the boat ready and breaking it down. Everybody’s participating and I think that’s what’s missed in a lot of activities that these guys and gals do,” he continues.

Josh, in town for the Rose Cup this weekend, tells us all there is to know about where to find coverage this weekend. He starts the conversation by telling us a little bit about the Rose Cup, the history and where to watch (Facebook Live). He continues by explaining the coverage process of the event , talking about some of the other recent Youth Championship events and touches slightly on the Ida Lewis event coming to SDYC at the end of July.

Neal and Ruthie Schneider just recently returned from their eight year circumnavigation around the globe on their sailboat, Rutea. The Schneider’s spoke about their journey through the years, life on the boat, and a slew of information about their many, many stops.
Neal and Ruthie, before beginning their cruise, were local business owners. After a competitor gave them an “offer they couldn’t refuse,” they sold their business and decided what better adventure to take than to sail around the globe!

Christy Crawford Donnelly, formerly known as Christy Steinman, covers a variety of topics on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast including the start of her sailing career, being a navigator, several intense races she sailed in, SORC, and of course, being the first woman to crew for America’s Cup with Dennis Conner.
Christy kicks off the Sailcast telling host Alli Bell about how she got started in sailing Hobie 14’s and how she was automatically hooked looking for wind shifts. She tells the story of her first sail in the Tahiti Race sailing on Obsession, where sailing became her “obsession.” Christy quickly became a talented Navigator and was hired by many skippers in the ‘80s.

Mark Reynolds joins us on the SDYC Sailcast to discuss how he got into sailing, his experiences racing through his career, the Olympics, his icons, and what he’s doing now.
Mark started sailing in a Sabot that his father built him when he was just a toddler. For the next 17 years, he stuck with the Sabot learning skills that he says was the foundation of his progression through the years. “It was huge for my tactic and boat handling skills,” he says.

Andrew Campbell starts the conversation talking about his families roles in his sailing success and following in his father’s footsteps before moving on to his next and most thrilling journey, the America’s Cup, sailing with American Magic.
Starting off the Sailcast episode, Andrew talks about the simple exposure that he received from the Junior Sailing Program and how his family (who double as his role models) made it the norm to go sailing often. Born in Toms River, NJ, Andrew made it to the West Coast to start the SDYC Junior Sailing Program around age 6 or 7. His father, Bill Campbell, sailed the ’92 America’s Cup and was Commodore nearly 15 years ago. “My family always used SDYC as the center of their universe,” he explains.

Max Brennan, 17, recently sailed on Heartbeat during the SDYC Islands Race. He sails out of Newport Sea Base and Balboa Yacht Club, starting in Sabots in Newport Beach, California. After making the transition into FJs, to 420s to 29ers, he jumped into bigger keelboats and began match racing with Balboa Yacht Club.
Max begins by talking about some of his recent successes including his time at Rose Cup and Gov Cup, along with some events that he sailed in Australia. He explains some of the opportunities he was given as a youth sailor in prestigious, international youth sailing events.

John Miller is welcomed to the San Diego Sailcast. John and Host Alli Bell jump right into the details discussing new sailing safety requirements, especially offshore, along with the Safety at Sea programs that are available to complete those requirements.
The two-day program consists of weather briefings, a search and rescue for the US Coast Guard, and other topics including communication, medical, equipment, technology, and hands-on work.
“Good seamanship will always trump technology,” he says. John explains how they review many scenarios that they sailors may encounter, how they learn from other sailors challenges, and how getting on the water is crucial to learning.

Robbie Haines, Olympic Gold Medalist and seven time World Champion, joins host Alli Bell on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast to talk about the Olympics and his experiences racing with with Roy Disney’s Pyewacket.
Robbie started sailing on a sabot his father built while at sea working for Scripps. At eight years old, he sailed solo from San Diego to Coronado. After racing Sabots, Robbie talks about his transition through Penguins and Catamarans to Solings. He reminisces about winning one regatta in South Bay that changed his confidence and let him to sailing Stars. He then moves on to stories about Star Worlds in 1973 where they unexpectedly took 7th out of 60.
