Etchells North Americans Begins with Camet Leading

By Emily Willhoft, Photos courtesy of Cynthia Sinclair | August 18, 2017

The first day of the 2017 Etchells North American Championship was a true textbook definition of champagne sailing. The talent of the twenty-nine boat fleet was apparent as competitors took to the waters for the first part of the three day long battle for the title of Etchells North American Champion.

Race Committee ran three races in Coronado Roads in sunny, warm weather complete with the San Diego skyline as a stunning backdrop to the day. Racing was slightly delayed at the start of the day as the wind picked up. After one general recall, the wind remained about 10-12 knots, and racing continued uninterrupted.

Moth & A-Cat North American Championship Come to San Diego Bay

By Emily Willhoft | August 15, 2017

For the first time ever, this fall the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) will host the both the Moth and A-Cat North American Championships back-to-back. The events will feature high-speed sailing on South San Diego Bay, off the beaches of Coronado at Crown Cove, in one person International Moth Dinghies and A-Cat Catamarans.

The Moth North American Championship will occur first, with three full days of sailing from September 29-October 1. When looking at both registration lists, competitors will travel from as far as New Jersey, Florida, and Canada to race in these high-performance events.

Matthew Knowles from Newport, Rhode Island, has participated in six Moth North American Championships and plans to attend this year's event in San Diego. “San Diego is the new hot spot for Moth sailing in the US. Matt Struble has done a great job growing the fleet, and we are thrilled to be racing North Americans in San Diego this fall. It is hard to think of a better spot to race some of the fastest boats around.”

Morgan Cup Victory Recap from Nevin Snow

By Nevin Snow | August 09, 2017

San Diego Yacht Club proudly sent a team of twelve members to the 2017 Morgan Cup to defend their 2016 title. Led by team captain Jake Reynolds, both Scott Sinks and Nevin Snow helped him on the helms. Rounding out the crew was Marly Isler, Carissa Crawford, Jake LaDow, Duncan Swain, Erik Shampain, AJ Reiter, Andy Reiter, Nick Martin, and Nick Kaschak. Day 1 of the defense started out poorly. Some of the rust was harder to shake than anticipated, and the team started out 0-3 and promptly moved to the bottom of the standings. However, in keeping it light on the first day of a three day regatta, their boathandling pushed them through to a 4-1 finish to the day. Due to some unusual upsets, a 5-4 record put Team SDYC in 3rd place. Team StFYC and Team NYYC both had solid days and were poised to be contenders on the weekend.

Team SDYC Wins Back-To-Back Morgan Cup Team Races

By Stuart Struelli/NYYC | August 07, 2017

NEWPORT, R.I. (August 6, 2017) — For the third time in four years, the Morgan Cup, the toughest trophy in keelboat team racing, has been won by a team from the West Coast. San Diego Yacht Club repeated as the champion today, defeating New York Yacht Club 3-1 in a thrilling final series sailed under blue skies and in a shifty and puffy northwesterly breeze. From 2003, when the Morgan Cup Team Race was first run, through 2013, only the host New York Yacht Club and Long Island's Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club were able to lay claim to the trophy. Southern California's Newport Harbor Yacht Club broke that stranglehold in 2014 and San Diego Yacht Club now appears poised to start its own run.

"This regatta is packed with some of the best team racers from around the world," said Jake Reynolds, a skipper and team captain for San Diego Yacht Club. "If you can win a race in this regatta, you've done really well. To win [the whole event] is really an honor."

Perfect Day for the 2017 Dutch Shoe Marathon

By Emily Willhoft, Photos courtesy of Cynthia Sinclair | July 24, 2017

SAN DIEGO (July 21, 2017) Over 150 junior and senior sailors took San Diego Bay on July 21, 2017 for the 45th Annual Dutch Shoe Marathon. A summer time favorite, these competitors completed the annual dinghy distance race from San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) to Coronado Yacht Club all in a sabot sailboat.

The sky was perfectly sunny and temperatures were in the high 70s with lighter winds mostly around 6 knots when the fleets began, starting in La Playa at noon. From there, they traveled down San Diego Bay, traveling over 7 miles on the race course, ultimately finishing in Glorietta Bay. Most participants were between the ages of 8 and 15 with many adult sailors also participating in the senior division.

Marleigh Henehan from Mission Bay Yacht Club was leading most of the race in her yellow striped sabot. At 14 years old, this was only Marleigh’s second Dutch Shoe Marathon. “I raced it two years ago and I capsized during that race. Since then, I’ve moved up two fleets. The first time I did it I was in C1 and now I’m in C3. I’ve been going to sailing camp in Mission Bay every afternoon to practice.”

Marleigh triumphantly crossed the finish line first, sailing into the horns and cheers of the spectator boats. After crossing she pumped her first in the air and exclaimed, “Girls Rule!”

2017 Etchells North American Championship Will Test Wits and Stamina

By Emily Willhoft | July 18, 2017

SAN DIEGO (July 18, 2017) From August 16-19, San Diego Yacht Club and Etchells Fleet 13 will host the 2017 International Etchells Class North American Championship. Over 30 Etchells are expected to race in San Diego’s ocean venue called the Coronado Roads over four days for the opportunity to be named the Etchells North American Champion. This event precedes the Etchells World Championship, which will be held this September in San Francisco.

San Diego Yacht Club is a familiar venue for many of these Etchells sailors. SDYC last hosted the event in 2010 and also hosted the World Championship in 2011.

Several world class competitors have already registered for the event, including Tom Carruthers, the 2017 Etchells West Coast Spring Series overall winner and the 2014 Etchells North American Championship winner. “The 2017 Etchells North American Championship should include a fleet from all over the world. I know of at least two Australian competitors, as well as quite a few from the East Coast. I'm glad SDYC has the opportunity to host the event, and I know they will provide their normal excellent hospitality.”
