Pac 52 Callisto Wins 2021 CA Offshore Race Week

By Jared Wohlgemuth | June 11, 2021

The 2021 California Offshore Race Week was the first opportunity for many teams to stretch their legs in over a year and sail in one or more distance races down the California Coast. A variety of conditions were seen throughout the week, starting with great breeze sending boats under the Golden Gate bridge towards Monterey, to still waters during the Coastal Cup and SoCal 300 that caused several teams to retire, or fight through the light conditions to an extended version of the race.

Chris Busch and Team Win 2021 Etchells West Coast Spring Series

By Casey Allocco, SDYC Communications Coordinator | May 17, 2021

It’s apparent that in sailing, consistency ultimately leads to success.

Team Elizabeth proved that, earning the first place title for the 2021 Etchells West Coast Spring Series. The team, skippered by Chris Busch and crewed by Ben Mitchell and Patrick Powell, finished the series without any first place regatta wins, but a string of three second place finishes in the final three regattas was significant. Going into the Orca Bowl, Busch was in a three way tie with Jim Cunningham’s Lifted and Tom Carruthers's Louise. With the same consistency and fast sailing, Team Elizabeth was able to finish on top and proudly accept the first place award.

Elizabeth was absent for the first race in the series, the Helly Hanson NOOD Regatta (and Bill Bennett Cup). They finished second in both the Midwinters West and in the Pacific Coast Championship.

Volvo 70 Pyewacket Breaks Cabo Race Record by 15 Hours

By | March 29, 2021

Roy Disney's Volvo 70 Pyewacket sailed the 800+ nm NHYC Cabo Race course in record time, smashing the previous monohull course record by over 15 hours, averaging greater than 20 knots over the course. The new course record is 1 day, 21 hours, 22 minutes and 53 seconds. Only one multihull is verified to have completed the course faster, which was Mighty Merloe in 2015 having finished in 1 day 16 hours. The crew reports having had a great ride with tremendous boat speeds. Pyewacket sweeps the Cabo Race as 1st overall, 1st in Division 1 and 1st to finish.
