2011 Prince of Wales Championship

By | May 04, 2011

The weekend of April 2-3 Jake Reynolds, Jake La Dow, Andy Reiter and I all traveled up to San Francisco at the lovely St. Francis Yacht Club to compete for two spots to go to the Prince of Wales Championship. It ended up being a great weekend for sailing as there was a lot of breeze, probably in the 15-18 knot range, and the boats were very even and ready to race.

We started off with a few wins and we were feeling good, especially since we were the only team under 20 there. At the end of our first round robin, we had only lost two races to Peter Lane and Chris Nesbitt, but we were determined to come out firing for the second round robin, because both of those races were really close and we knew we could beat them.

In the second round robin we succeeded in beating both Chris Nesbitt and Peter Lane, even drawing a black flag on both of them, meaning that they fouled us so bad that the umpires decided to just completely disqualify them. However, we did lose one race to Kristen Lane, who had only lost a couple of races also, and between Kristen, Chris, and ourselves it was all very close for the top two spots.

When all was said and done, we tied Kristen for second and lost the tiebreaker on account of the fact that she beat us last, and finished half of a point behind Chris Nesbitt, who was docked a point for ripping our spinnaker in half in a dramatic downwind battle.

Despite not qualifying here, we are still confident we can qualify for the POW and without any of the Comp Fund’s help that would not have been possible. Thank you for everything!

Sincerely,

Nevin, Jake, Jake and Andy
