We had a great turnout for the Bay Challenge Saturday June 5 with over 36 boats wetting lines from South Bay to Zuniga. Bite was open in the early morning with a ton of shorts bass and halibut, with the big bass waking up just a few hours before final weigh-in.
The weigh-in was impressive with SWYC grabbing an early lead with a soul crushing 21.2lbs of combined bass weight. The largest weighing in at 7.4lbs (barred sand bass – caught on anchovy, 1 hour before last weigh-in!), and the second at 4.5lbs (on same drift!). However, Alex Volis (SDYC) hit back with the “Largest Other” with a 3.35lb short fin corvina. Silvergate (maybe CCYC) landed the largest halibut at 8.9lbs. This put us at a 3-way tie at 1pt each. The powers that be (pays to be the hosting club) decided that the tie breaker would be total weight of all fish in all categories. Hmm…. Well, those slugs were just too tough to beat.
Final results:
However, there were some true hi-lites for the club and $100 bills for largest fish by a woman, Jr. and man, this included:
Final tally aside, I have to say it was a great day. Tom, Miguel and the entire SWYC were terrific hosts. Not only did they provide great food, beer, and wine; they gave out over $1000 in prize money. Also, I was super impressed by our Junior Anglers who showed up in force and fished hard all day. Well done.
