There have been many exciting developments since our February Mainsheet update!

Two IC37 training and practice platforms – East Coast and West Coast, plus Training Sails and more...

East
With the help of Rick Merriman, Team SDYC has secured a co-charter from the NYYC fleet of 20 brand new club owned IC37’s this summer. This will allow the Team to gain valuable boat on boat racing and practice time in the Newport, RI venue prior to the September NYYC Invitational Cup.

Team SDYC plans to sail in Newport from June 29 - July 7, competing in two regattas during that time: The NYYC One Design Regatta and the Sail Newport Regatta, with full practice days in between. Additional events are being considered. A training partner for practice days has also been engaged. The Team worked very hard to secure a co—charter arrangement with a NYYC member in order to lower the cost as much as possible for the team.

West
SDYC members Drew Freides and Bill Ruh have graciously and generously offered Team SDYC use of their brand new (and one of the very few non-NYYC owned IC37’s launched prior to the regatta) IC37 for Team training here in San Diego. The arrival of Drew and Bill’s boat to SDYC seems to be on schedule according to the latest update from the builder. Having the boat at the club will provide many great opportunities for the team as we get closer to the event. It is our intent to sail as much as possible. We are planning on bringing the entire team to San Diego twice over the summer for training weekends. The Team is also planning on sailing as many local regattas as possible and is looking for additional sailing opportunities as the summer schedule comes together. As time permits, the Team would love to invite SDYC Board Members and Team supporters join us on the water as well.

Class Sails
NYYC does not include sails with a chartered IC 37 and many days on the water practicing in San Diego will put “plenty of time” on sails. Team SDYC has secured a suit of IC37 Class sails (a main, jib and asymmetrical spinnaker). The sails should be arriving in late April. Team SDYC will be shipping these sails back and forth to be used on the West coast boat here in San Diego and on the East coast charter boat in Newport. IC 37 owner / members Drew Freides and Bill Ruh have once again graciously stepped up and offered to partner with Team SDYC on the suit of IC37 class sails to lower expenses for the team. Thank you, Bill and Drew, for your continuing support.

Fundraising
In September, Team SDYC will be lining up against 20 richly supported teams representing some of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world. Early on, Team SDYC researched the economics involved with a successful NYYC Invitational Cup effort. The Team quickly concluded fundraising would be a key component to success. With the amazing support of friends, family, club leadership and engaged SDYC members, the fundraising has been going well for the Team. The fantastic support will put a solid Team SDYC on the starting line this September but we are still shy of our goal. The objective is to put a well-practiced, well coached, thoroughly trained Team SDYC on the starting line and to do that, fundraising continues.

As we get a bit deeper into the year we are looking to get in front of the membership as much as possible to keep everyone informed about this special opportunity for our Club. Getting in front of the membership and making sure that fellow members understand what we are trying to do is very important to the team.

Team SDYC – Max Hutcheson, Nick Martin, Nick Kashak, Tyler Sinks, Jake LaDow, Carissa Crawford, Drew Freides, Tori Porter and Erik Shampain - would like to thank the SDYC Board, the membership and of course all those who have been working hard to provide the Team representing San Diego Yacht Club with the best possible chance of success at the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup in September.

NYYC INVITATIONAL CUP: FAST FACTS

A couple of years ago, the New York Yacht Club launched an ambitious program to build a new class of identical 37-foot race boats. The first 20 of the new IC37 class boats were purchased by the NYYC for member and invitational regatta use. Many more IC 37’s have been purchased by private owners – making for a new, exciting and evenly matched one-design keel boat Class.

There are currently seven IC37s on site at NYYC’s IC37 storage / work facility in Newport, RI. Hull No. 8 will be arriving soon. The 2019 NYYC Invitational Cup will be contested using NYYC’s fleet of 20 brand new IC37 class boats.
