August 2002 Mainsheet PC News

By | August 01, 2002

Summer is officially here! I am still celebrating the success of the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival, and this coming weekend brings our “Lady Skipper” PC Fun Race. For the last week, Cissy has been yelling at me and telling me all the things I am doing wrong, so she is all ready for the helm this Sunday! I don’t know if I am ready to be the “yellie” but I am sure we will have a lot of fun and a good day.

By the time you read this, the PC Nationals will have come to a close. I will report this years “crack boat and crew” next month. I had hoped that our Troy Sears (#23) would help with trophies again this year, but he let us down. I hear he took some time off to take his appendix out. I don’t know if that is a new boat or an old girlfriend..but I can’t believe he put personal needs before his fleet members… Oh well... hope you’re back in the mix soon, Troy.

Remember that August 25th will bring the “Around the Coronados” race. We may or may not get there... but I am told half the fun is in trying! A great opportunity to learn to trim your ‘chute! Think of that long run home! If you can catch Bud Caldwell, maybe he will throw some cookies at you as an
incentive!

I am pleased to report that I have been contacted by a few people inquiring about taking on the task of restoring the PC’s that are new to the fleet. Nothing would please me more than seeing new life bestowed upon the hulls awaiting the chance to be the new fleet champion.

#37, SPOT, should splash soon. Those who attended the Wooden Boat Festival, saw her at the yard and she is looking fine. She now has her mast in, as well as the interior pieces. I am very anxious to see her sail again after 6 years on the hard.

Today was the “Lady Skipper’s” Regatta that I referenced at the beginning of this article. Thanks to Jack Sutphen and George Lindley for serving as our committee boat. I saw 6 PC’s on the water, however only 3 of us were involved in the “fun race”. It was a great bay course and we had a terrific time. Congrats to #18 and #21 for a very close finish (in that order) and not-so-congrats to #63 for bringing up the rear. We still had a great time and the weather was kind to us.

In closing… a minute ago I was sitting here reading the new July Mainsheet. Each month I am amazed with the beauty and professionalism of our publication. If you look on the inside of the front cover (bottom) you will note that our publication received the prestigious “Apex Award for Publication Excellence” in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. “Wow!” I said to myself. “This is great that our Mainsheet is so terrific and gets awards and it all comes so natural to our fine club”. It was then I remembered that it does not “come naturally”. It comes with the hard work of photographers, writers and especially our Irmgard Ryan who puts it all together so beautifully! Yes, it’s what we expect from the SDYC… but it doesn’t come without hard work, effort and caring. My thanks to Irmgard for doing such a great job and putting a smile on my face the first week of each month!

That’s about it from PC row. I hope readers will come down to see us from time to time. That sail with the circle and the big “PC”, has been circling around the clubhouse for about 73 years now. I still can’t figure out why everyone doesn’t sail one?

Enjoy your summer and our club!
