SDYC Opening Day Vixen Cruise

Next week is the 134th Opening Day at the San Diego Yacht Club, and with us to talk a little bit about it is SDYC Commodore Jerelyn Biehl coming to you from her very own Cupola.

Jerelyn joins us on the Sailcast to talk about all things SDYC Opening Day, the 90th year of the Junior Program what it means to the Biehl Family, what it’s like to be on the Board and be Commodore, and what’s on the horizon at SDYC.

She starts off by telling us some fun facts about the SDYC Cupola and the history of SDYC before transitioning into Opening Day and why it’s such a special weekend here in Point Loma. Going forward, she talks about some of the traditions of Opening Day, what our members can expect, the celebration, and the different awards that boat owners can win here.

Jerelyn reflects on what Opening Day means to her personally as a sailor and a Commodore. “Opening Day is a celebration of all things San Diego Yacht Club,” she explains. She touches on the junior aspect of Opening Day and how it celebrates the Junior Program’s 90th year along with why the Junior Program has a special place in her family’s heart. Jerelyn continues speaking about Sea Scouts Ship 1886 and their involvement in Opening Day.

Becoming Commodore is different at every club. Jerelyn explains the process for SDYC compared to other clubs around the world. “It’s overwhelming, but [being Commodore] is the highest honor I can think of… Now I walk in and I know almost every inch of this place.”

She finished with recapping what’s going on with her family and with some advice for those looking to get into sailing and San Diego Yacht Club.

A few upcoming events include:

  • Acapulco Challenge
  • Vixen Cruise
  • Ida Lewis Doublehanded Championship
  • Star Western Hemisphere Championship
  • Senior Sabot Nationals
  • Avocado Cup (tentative)
