Max Hutcheson joins us on the SDYC Sailcast after several successes in the sailing world including being on Team SDYC who took 2nd in the NYYC Invitational Cup, 1st in the Farr 40 Worlds, and who will be participating in the upcoming SDYC Lipton Cup.

The conversation begins with how Max started sailing, growing up right here in Point Loma and being a sailor in the SDYC Junior Program. Growing up, Max continued sailing at USC and after, participating recently in some really exciting regattas.

Max and Alli reflect on some of the highlights of being a part of the Junior Program, participating and coaching, and especially making life-long sailing friendships. One of which brought him and the team together to win the Resolute Cup and came in second in the NYYC Invitational. Max explains the preparation, steps getting up to the Invitational and the practice routine. He then introduces the full team and gives credit to his coaches!

“It was a very cool feeling, walking in and seeing all the pomp and circumstance,” Max says in explaining how big NYYC made the event feel.

Max and Alli recap through some of the races of the NYYC Invitational, going through several great moments for the team, hiccups, struggles and so on. Max tells Alli how much he appreciated the support from the Club during the races.

Moving forward, the two talk about the upcoming SDYC Lipton Cup, where Max and his team are defending champions. He talks about the members of the team and Alli explains what the Lipton Cup is all about.

The episode ends with Max’s advice to juniors looking to get into sailing. “What’s made the biggest difference for me being at the point now that I’m at sailing, is that when I was younger I was the first one to jump into the bigger boats when I could.”
