On this episode of the SDYC Sailcast, SDYC Commodore Mike Morton, Jr. joins us to talk about what’s been happening at the Club, the future of Club finances, recent additions and projects, and what some SDYC members have been involved in on the water.

Director Alli Bell and Commodore Mike Morton, Jr. start off this week’s Sailcast episode with a short review of Commodore’s goals for the year. With no “specific” goals in mind, Commodore Morton explains that he is just trying to get the Club back to normalcy. One piece of normalcy Commodore Morton hopes to resume is Opening Day, which he says is currently scheduled and being planned for April 18, but is tentative.

The two talk about what’s going on at the Club, including Pavilion Drink specials and restating some of the Club rules regarding Covid at this time. They discuss regattas that are happening and how there are still ways to enjoy the facilities safety.

Commodore Morton reviews the history of his family at the Club, telling Alli about his Grandfather who was Commodore over 25 years ago. He also speaks to his other “Commodore” titles elsewhere before going into his years of experience running the family restaurant group including several of San Diego’s most popular restaurants. He tells the story of meeting his wife, Erica, and the time of their first date on the water.

Heading back in the direction of the Club, Commodore Morton talks about how involved the membership is and how grateful he is to have such a dedicated board. “We appreciate your advice,” he says - jokingly with Alli as she reassures him that will be a response he will use quite often this year.

Commodore Morton and Director Bell welcome once again Brian Carlson, GM of almost a full year now. They also welcome new Executive Chef Frederic Castan. The two give their condolences to the Frye family, honoring the legacy of Past Commodore Fred Frye who recently passed.

The episode switches topics to a lengthly conversation about the future of Club finances, speaking about the assessment, current maintenance projects, and the future of CapX funding - including the new Marina (looking 15+ years ahead)

Recently, a handful of SDYC members played their role in the America’s Cup (Andrew Campbell, Matt Cassidy, Jimmy Spithill, Melanie Roberts). The two talk about SDYC’s junior program and how the program continues to shape the future of competitive sailors.

“It’s a real tribute to what happens around here. A testament to this junior program.”

In addition to the America’s Cup, Commodore mentions how excited he is for Skipper Tyler Sinks and team in their heading back to the NYYC Rolex Invitational in September.

The conversation ends with Alli’s famous question, “What advice do you have for those who want to do what you’ve done?” Commodore’s main advice is simple: get involved.
