What a weekend we have ahead of us… starts out fun and ends on a serious note. First the fun!
Tomorrow is Founders' Day… our Birthday at SDYC and yes, we're having a party to celebrate. The big BLUE burgee will be flying from our newly-painted flagpole (thanks Keith Palmateer!) and I would encourage all of you to come down and spend the day on your boat or around the Club. Later on we will have a Beer Can style BBQ on the front deck with music and dancing provided by the Blond Brothers band from Point Loma. This will start early and go late so don’t plan on anything else tomorrow night!
From Fun to FunDraising… anyone want to trade places with me Monday night? Yes, Monday night is our Semi-Annual meeting at 7:00 PM. As noticed, we will be presenting a Bylaw amendment for the vote of members present in order to incrementally adjust our dues and slip rates over the next three years. As opposed to the measure presented last June, there is no sinking fund for future replacement and there are no ongoing cost of living increases.
Our Board and Finance Committee have worked hard to project future regular expenses, the costs to repair our rapidly-deteriorating docks and the costs and fees required to dredge areas where dock access is not always possible during low tide due to silt build-up since our last dredging project in the early 1990's. These improvements will occur over the next two years, so results will be noticeable immediately. The last time our Board came to the membership for these increases was six years ago and with any luck, this increase should hold us for another six to seven years.
We realize that the economy is still tough for some people and nobody wants to pay more if they can help it. Believe me when I tell you that this is the last thing any Commodore wants to propose, however the fact is that we need to increase our revenues now if we want to maintain the standards we all expect from a great Club like SDYC.
My fellow officers and Board members appreciate your support and we hope to see you on Monday night to vote for the amendment. Since we expect a big crowd, please arrive early so that we can distribute ballots well ahead of our 7:00 PM start time.
