Hello Sailors, Parents, and Coaches,
On behalf of our Junior Board of Directors, I’d like to thank each of you for participating in the 2020 Junior Invitational Regatta; and congratulate all of Team SDYC on executing and performing very well at what was certainly a challenging event on the water!
I’d like to start by thanking the many individuals who helped put on a great show. Thank you to Sailing Director Jeff Johnson and his volunteer team, including Sarah and Tim Fleming aboard Corinthian, who escalated the historically casual Junior Invite Radial course to the biggest fleet at the event, with a worthy course on the Coronado Roads. Thanks also to Coach Gigi Dean for donning her RC cap this weekend and managing our C3 course in La Playa; and to the hardest working man in show business, Coach Erik Hallback, handling markset duties on the tricky Shoal course. Thank you to our weekend coaches, supporting our sailors at very mentally tough event: Sara Parker, Caylin Schnoor, and Katie Olsen (C3); Rebecca McElvain and Piper Holthus (C2); Tom Rall (A/B/C1); and Head Coach Bryan Paine with Matt Dorgan on Radials. A huge thank you goes out to Marguerite Parzen for publishing live results for all courses throughout the weekend; and to photographer Bob Betancourt for his excellent shots!
We also have an impressive list of top performances by Team SDYC sailors to report. Congratulations to all of our C3 racers: August Felgenhauer, 16th; Emanuel Smith, 15th; Cristiano Wright, 12th; Mirabelle Barelli, 11th; Lorelei Heim, 6th; and Kate Lindley, 2nd/17, and advancing to our competitive C2 Fleet! C2 sailed on the Shoal, with 24 boats, and several SDYC skippers in the hunt. Congratulations to Wesley Logan, 5th; Ben Simpson, 3rd; and Wyatt Kelly with the win and move up to C1! A, B, and C1 sailed as one fleet of 22 boats, with both combined and separate ranking. Congrats to C1 trophy winners, Evan Tofolo, 4th; and Lance Morton, 3rd; and B Fleet trophy winners, Kousei Hatter, 2nd/8th Overall; and Cameron Schnoor, 1st/6th Overall! 2019 Junior Sabot National Champion Anton Schmid showed he’s still the boat to beat, winning the 2020 Junior Invitational Sabot A/B/C1 fleet with an impressive 14 point margin, with four bullets and dropping a 5 to keep only 1s, 2s, and 3s; truly an amazing accomplishment over a dicey weekend of racing!
On the Radial course, 37 boats made for great competition. Congrats to Top 10 trophy winners: Noah Nyenhuis, 8th; Peter Busch, 7th; Jr Secretary Alice Schmid, 6th; Jr 29er Fleet Captain Samantha Gardner, 5th, and Top Girl; Jr Laser Fleet Captain Devon Owen, 3rd; Jr Vice Commodore Calvin Schmid, 2nd; with SWYC’s Carter Vachon topping the weekend. Nice work, Team SDYC Radials!
Please stay tuned for more advice on Sabot rigging, equipment, and rules; and a detailed discussion of the INSA Fleet Promotion Guidelines. With no Jr Nationals this past summer, we skipped annual educational moments, including pre-Nationals measurement, so we’ll make sure everyone is up to speed next.
We have several more racing and potential move-up opportunities over the next month, before things will typically slow down over Nov-Dec. Here’s what’s on deck:
