May 2001 Mainsheet PC News

Cloudy and cold again today!! The weather lair told me that today was going to be in the 70’s and sunny. I can barely see Fiesta Island from my desk and the ocean is just a gray extension of the sky.

I have, for days, been working feverishly in an effort to get the WINGS restoration article in print and it feels like I haven’t accomplished anything except typing, for weeks. Paul and Tom Kettenburg are mulling over SC Trepte’s PC History book and their personal files, in an effort to determine what kind of period hardware will be needed for our restoration project. We hope to have a list and pile of drawings or sketches soon, but in the meantime, I will ask all of you to go out to the garage and find that box of old hardware that you have been moving around for the last 70 years. Even broken pieces might give us a clue and help us to identify what might be needed. Photos of early boats that MIGHT show a cleat or winch or rigging would be extremely helpful. I promise to take great care of any photos you would care to share and return them after scanning. Feel free to give me a call if you want to drop something off to my attention at the club! At the risk of being accused of taking up too much space, I will say no more about the project in this column, but do look for the announcement within this issue of the MAINSHEET!

Our fearless leader Fleet Captain Dick Stratton is having less than great luck in his attempts to get us all out on the water. Of course, we’re all busy with other obligations and interests…and it’s not like the weather has helped the cause. On March 4th, he even conned the SWYC into giving the fleet a starting gun and keeping times for the first fleet “fun race”, but again, the dark skies and promises of rain by the weather liar scared everyone away. Dick gave the  following report: #18 started, raced the course and finished! He said they had 10-12 knot winds and finished the course in 1½ hour. Way to go! This was a perfect 1st place win!

You should also remember that the annual Wooden Yacht Show is coming up the weekend of June 15th. The event will again be held at Koehler Kraft Boatyard and we expect it to be a great show with many new entries. If you are interested showing your boat, please do contact C. F. Koehler.

Until next time, “May the wind always be on your quarter, and your jib draw full!”
