Opening Day Just Around the Corner

By | March 28, 2014

The Etchells Fleet will be flying around the race track in the Coronado Roads during the 2014 edition of the Midwinters West Regatta this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is the 20th anniversary of this fantastic regatta. Hats off to Fleet 13. Three days of world class racing, will be bookended by informative post-racing debrief sessions, hosted libations for the crews and their guests, and the traditionally generous prize-giving ceremony hosted by Tom Carruthers of Point Loma Outfitting. Check it out. Good luck racers!

SDYC's Opening Day celebration is so jammed with fun, ceremony, celebration and parties, it consumes two days – April 12th and 13th. This Opening Day will mark SDYC's 129th Yachting Season dating back to 1886 --- extraordinary when you think about it… before the Hotel del had electric lights, SDYC had Opening Day! Wow.

Here's the scoop about the celebration of our 129th Yachting Season:

Saturday the 12th is the Boat Inspection, Opening Day Race and the Opening Day Dinner Dance. Bragging rights and big bling are on the line for the boat inspection. Bling and bragging rights are on the line for the OD Race. Broken buttons, bottomless beer (wine too) and a blast of a good time are a guarantee for the Dinner Dance… have a look at the menu, the band, desserts +++, all at a ridiculous bargain.

Sunday the 13th is Opening Day. Brunch, Best Dressed Dock, Boat Hospitality, bands, flags, pageantry and ceremony. The Opening Day ceremony begins at 1200. Go to the website for all the details.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Trophy Chair Bonnie Rickard is looking for a couple of volunteers to help polish up the Club's bling for Opening Day. Monday March 31, 0930 until done… LUNCH INCLUDED! Contact Bonnie at bonniesact@gmail.com to let her know if you can help. Who said there is no "free lunch?" --- Thank you.

Puerto Vallarta 2014 is in the books. Each and every SDYC member should be beaming with pride how 32nd running of this incredible, historic race was managed by Steve Malowney and his PV '14 Team. A complete and total success. Well done Steve!… too many thank you's for this column, but please know every aspect of the race was handled professionally and done well. A special thanks to SDYC's "three amigos" – Jeff Johnson, Jared Wohlgemuth and Gabby Pacheco – who worked literally around the clock for a week to pull this off… and a tip of the cap to Captain Bob Shinn and Dr. Mike Satterlee who manned the finish boat Andante with Jeff Johnson.

Congrats to my SDSU Aztec's on a nice win over Arizona last night. On to the Elite Eight! A hard fought game was witnessed by many loud and proud Aztec fans in the bar. How about the 40 foot swish buzzer beater by X. Thames! YESSSSS!

April Fools! Nice run guys. We'll get 'em next year.
