Point Loma HS Wins National Team Race Championship

By | June 01, 2012

Terrific Buffalo Beach Bash last Sunday. Under the leadership of Jim and Susy Dorsey, the BB crowd managed to attract 300 people and signing up 147 supporters "BB Clubbers" while raising over $16,000 for the cause. Well done!

Congratulations to the Point Loma High School sailors who won the National Team Racing Championships in Boston last weekend! I was on the raft-up monitoring the "tweets" coming live from the regatta as they clinched the final race. This makes a clean sweep for PL after winning the Fleet racing just a few weeks prior. PL is just one HS team training out of SDYC and the others have come up winners as well on the national stage. Many team members are also SDYC Jr. Program participants.

Another shout-out goes to our Race Director, Jeff Johnson. He must have hired a PR person because lately he's been all over the media commenting on this and that. This month's Sailing World has a follow-up piece to an earlier article about Junior Programs and how much to push the kids. Saying they didn't have enough space, they gave him more this month and justifying it by saying "Given the talent emerging from SDYC's Junior Program, whatever it is they're doing is working". Again, well done!

You should receive your Semi-Annual meeting mailers this weekend. I cannot stress enough how important this Bylaw vote is for the immediate preservation of our Club experience. You will see in the financial overview that management has worked hard to cut expenses and that our overall financial health is excellent. It has been six years since we have raised our fees and with rent and other expenses on the rise… plus accumulating deferred maintenance, it's time. I hope that you will plan to attend the meeting and vote in favor of the proposal.
