Members of San Diego Yacht Club are probably all aware of the tragedy that occurred last Sunday in San Diego Bay when a 26' MacGregor sailboat capsized with ten people aboard resulting in the deaths of two. What may not be known is that Member Spouse John Downing and Son Zack as well as member John and Karen Harrop assisted in the rescues from their boats and deserve accolades. Speaking with John Downing days later he emphasized how important it is for all of us to consider in advance how we would handle such an emergency with our own boats. Key is calling for help on VHF Channel 16, firing flares to attract attention and getting floatation gear, PFDs, ring buoys or cushions to the people in the water. Also, think about how you would actually bring a shocked or unconscious person aboard your boat. I personally resolve to wear a PFD from now on when in a small boat and hope you all will as well.
Also, in case you were not aware, our honored, long time member, the late Gerry Driscoll's Funeral will be tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, 2011, at 11:00 AM at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen, San Diego, with reception at San Diego Yacht Club at 12:30 PM. All are invited to join a boat parade at 2:30 PM. for scattering of ashes at sea.
