It was great to get back out east for the 2021 Morgan Cup Hosted by New York Yacht Club. After a year Hiatus from the team race circuit, it was refreshing to see familiar faces and do some keel boat team racing. Having not team raced in a regatta in over a year the first day of racing saw some cobwebs getting removed from team SDYC. The first two days saw challenging conditions ranging from 2 knots to 22 knots and spinnakers being removed from racing Saturday afternoon. SDYC hovered around .500 for the two rounds robin rounds.
After gradual improvements over the weekend, going into the final day of racing we were in 5th place with the final format still unknown. Unfortunately, as we arrived at the venue Sunday morning, we were informed that the top four teams would be invited into the gold round. We were on the outside looking in. We played the cards we were dealt and went on to go 5-1 on Sunday and win the silver fleet and secure 5th place overall. A disappointing result for our ambitious team, but large improvements throughout the weekend gives us confidence for future events. We cannot thank SDYC enough for the support and opportunity to compete at this event, the pinnacle of team racing in the world.
