The Marlin Club of San Diego held its annual Spring Shootout tournament on Saturday, May 18. Several boats from SDYC among other clubs competed. Team Tres Burros of SDYC, led by Captain Rob Pennell and Co-Captain//Executive Chef Ben Murphey, left the dock Friday afternoon to search for fish before the midnight “lines in” time. After thoroughly scanning the 60 Mile Bank without seeing any sign of fish (and enjoying a delicious steak dinner) the team decided to pivot and make a 35 mile run to an area near the 1010 Trench, which is approximately 70 miles south of Point Loma.

The team started to look hard for fish about 8 miles away from a dense fleet of several sport boats. Suddenly at about 1 a.m., within about 2 miles of the fleet, the sonar showed a giant school of tuna under the boat. The team immediately deployed knife jigs & sinker bombs, and instantly had multiple hookups. The fish stayed under the boat long enough for 5 hookups with 4 bluefin tuna landed… all between 100-150 lbs.

Team Tres Burros won Top Boat in the Spring Shootout and easily swept the tuna category.

1st Place: Josh Tudor’s 140.8 lb bluefin tuna
2nd Place: Saff Commodore Jeff Tadder’s 131.4 lb bluefin tuna
3rd Place: Chris Logan’s 115.6 lb bluefin tuna

Thank you to the Marlin Club for hosting another great event!
