SDYC Ship 1886 was presented the National Centennial Award at the Annual San Diego - Imperial Council Venturing / Sea Scouts Awards Dinner on Saturday January 26.
In addition, Ship 1886 Bo'sun Gwen Curry, was inducted into the class of 2012 National Youth Leadership Society and Bo'sun Mate Admin Hannah Olson was awarded the Venturing Leadership Award. The heart and soul of what the Sea Scout program does is produce leaders for tomorrow. Both of these young women have learned and practiced outstanding leadership skills.
Last year, 2012, was the 100th anniversary of Sea Scouting in the USA. Sea Scout Ships throughout the US were encouraged to submit events for consideration as a 100th Anniversary Centennial Event as a way to celebrate this historical event. SDYC Ship 1886 applied to have their summer Catalina sail and camping trek designated an official Centennial event and received approval from BSA National.
Some of the Centennial event requirements, known as the S’s of Sea Scouting,are:
San Diego Council Commodore Ron Carlson awarded SDYC Ship 1886 two official Sea Scout Centennial Burgees which were accepted by youth member Dean Curry and Skipper Charlie Rogers. This burgees, which will be flown on future Ship events, indicate participation in an official National Sea Scout Centennial Event.
