Welcome to the 2012 Junior Summer Sailing Program

By | June 15, 2012

Hello Sailors and Parents!

School’s out and it’s time to get on the water! The 2012 SDYC Summer Sailing Program begins next Monday, June 18th!

For families joining us for the first time, you have been added to our email distribution list, through which we’ll provide you with lots of key information and also fun updates and pictures! This message will cover the basics that newcomers and veterans should know as our program gets started. Please let us know if you would like to add any email addresses to this distribution list.

  • Daily Schedule  All classes meet in or around the Jessop Classroom on the ground floor of the Malin Burnham Sailing Center.
    • 8:30 AM  Morning Classes Begin (Sea Urchins and Sea Horses)
    • 11:50AM - Noon  Pick up for Morning Classes
    • 1:00 PM  Afternoon Classes Begin
    • 4:30 PM  Afternoon Classes Dismissed

  • Drop-Off, Pick-Up, and Attendance
    • Morning Sailors must be signed in and out of class by a parent or other guardian approved by you. Please let your Class Chairperson know if you would like to add approved names.
    • Afternoon Sailors do not need to be signed in/out.
    • We take attendance in all classes every day. Please let us know if your child will be absent, so that we can plan and react appropriately.
    • Please be on time to drop-off and pick-up your sailor each day. Ours staff has scheduled tasks before and after each class that are critical to a smooth running program.
    • All participants must follow SDYC rules regarding supervision and behavior at all times, and the Summer Program staff cannot provide supervision outside of class time.
    • Non-SDYC Members are permitted on Club grounds during class time only, except as the guest of a Member.

  • SDYC Sailor Checklist  Please don’t forget to label all your gear!

  • Swim Check  All sailors must participate in a swim check on the first day of their camp. This check is done in the bay at the end of E Dock (“The Race Dock”). As you can see from the picture above we make it safe and fun! With some of our waterman coaches in the water, sailors jump in without their lifejackets, swim about 40’, tread water for 1 minute, then put on their lifejackets in the water, and are done. We will encourage kids lots of ways, but will never force anyone into the water. This is a critical event, as we need to know that all sailors are at least comfortable with the idea of being in the water, otherwise sailing will be understandably stressful. We wear lifejackets at all times around the water other than this swim check. No wetsuits please, and history has taught us that parents should not be present. Usually the kids need as much persuading to get out of the water as they did to get in!

  • Sea Urchin and Sea Horses Snacks  Parents of morning sailors are asked to take turns providing snacks/drinks. Class Chairpersons will supply details and schedules on the first day of class.

  • Family Night Dinners  Each Tuesday night through July 31st, all participants of all sessions are encouraged to participate in our famous Family Nights. These dinners begin at 6pm on the Pool Pavilion. Families may bring their own food/drink with grills available, or may order from a new Family Night menu at the Snack Bar. This is an excellent chance for sailors and parents to meet, or to get to know our amazing coaches better by hosting one or more for dinner. Hosting Sign-Up will be available via a poster in the Jessop Classroom. Don’t miss the first Family Night, June 19th, when we’ll formally introduce our coaches. On June 26th, our friends from Zhik Sailing will be putting on a fashion show with the kids to show of the latest in technical sailing apparel!

Thanks for joining the Summer Program! Our whole team is ready to have a fantastic couple months! Please feel free to contact John Fretwell with any questions at all.
