Will La Dow at the Youth Champs Regatta

By | August 31, 2011

Thank you for making it possible for my crew Cutter and I to compete in the 2011 Youth Championships regatta. Without your help we would never have been able to make that trip possible. This event was held in Newport, Rhode Island and run by Sail Newport.

The first day of the event was pouring rain, and very light wind in the morning. This regatta was off to an interesting start, considering you could not see more than 50 yards ahead of you for a good portion of the day. Finally in the afternoon a solid breeze filled in and the race committee got one race off. We started the race pretty far back in the high twenties, and fought through the entire race to get an 8th. This was a good result for us, considering where we started.

The next day was incredibly light, and had two knots of current. This whole day we struggled to find a groove and never really reached one. Cuttter and I ended the day with a 34,21,16. We were fairly upset with this result, but we just needed to stay positive and try to fight back.

The third day of the event was another tough one. Although the winds were solid, we could still not figure out where to go on the racecourse and we finished with a 31,13,24. Having gone through a series of tough days, we were incredibly motivated to do better the last day and finish strong.

The last day we knew that if there was ever a time to risk it all, it was now. We started at the pin end of the line the first race and ended up ok and ended up finishing 10th. The next race the pin was even more favored and we won it, finishing the race in 12th. This regatta did not exactly go in our favor, but isn’t that sailing? Sailing is one of many sports that every competition can’t go your way, you can not win them all. This regatta was a great learning experience and I enjoyed every minute of it. I look forward to representing our great club elsewhere in the future. Thank you again for all of your support.
