Ida Lewis was one of our first regattas outside of California without parents, so we weren’t sure what to expect. I traveled along side SDYC coach Beka Schiff and my teammate Sammie Gardner. Sammie and I have just recently entered the world of double handed sailing, experimenting in C420s, 29ers CFJs and most recently I420s. We took off Tuesday July 24, very early in the morning and after 5 hours in the air we arrived in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 2018 Junior Sabot Nationals at Long Beach Yacht Club wrapped up a great season for SDYC. The week was very tricky with some extreme currents and fog during the start of the second and third days causing some crazy wind shifts. First, second, and fifth in gold fleet, Team SDYC put in a ton of effort this year leading up to the event. Practice every day during the summer and a clinic with other clubs from our area ensured we were prepared.
This Fall, the San Diego Yacht Club will be hosting a trifecta of Finn Fleet Regattas including the Finn Pacific Coast Championship (PCC), Finn Masters North American Championship and the San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta (SDOCR). SDYC is home to the most active and fastest growing Finn Fleet in the country with plenty of opportunities to compete with some of the best Finn sailors in the United States.
Experienced and novice sailors alike will participate in the 15th annual Beneteau Cup at San Diego Yacht Club on September 8-9, 2018. This family-friendly race is open to all Beneteau owners, non-owners, coaches and crew for a laid back, educational sail at Coronado Roads and all around beautiful San Diego Bay.
We are always happy to take people sailing and introduce them to our family here but we were especially proud to be able to show the men and women of Coast Guard Sector San Diego how we support each other and the maritime culture that we all value so highly. Our membership came through and volunteers provided all of the support we could need to host 50+ people for an afternoon of sailboat racing and hospitality where we were able to show our appreciation for the Coast Guards’ constant presence both in and offshore, handling the situations where we need them the most.
