2022 CUBAR Odyssey Reaches Full Entry List

Cruise Underway to Baja Rally (CUBAR) has reached its target of 50 boats registered to depart on the journey from San Diego to La Paz, Mexico from October 30 - November 13. CUBAR was designed to give power boaters the opportunity to experience long distance cruising safely alongside other cruisers -- and more cruisers are taking advantage of the Rally with every running of the event. This year's edition of CUBAR has nearly double the registrants than its last running in 2019.


Pyewacket 70 Wins 2022 Islands Race

The 2022 Islands Race, co-hosted by San Diego Yacht Club and Newport Harbor Yacht Club, has been a known for a decade as the start to the offshore sailing season. The 142 nautical mile race around Catalina and San Clemente Islands featured 42 boats this year — the biggest turn out in its 13 year history. One boat in particular, Pyewacket 70, showed up ready to prove their preparation for the race is on point, and the set the pace for their offshore season.

Ian and I got the chance to travel to Miami for the 29er Midwinters East Regatta. This year, the regatta was the first part of the two-part Youth World Championship qualifier. The regatta was
held out of Miami Yacht Club and was raced in the ocean just south of Miami Beach. It is a place where we have raced several times before and were comfortable with our experience sailing at that venue. But one thing we have learned about Miami, like everywhere, is that anything could happen.


2022 Islands Race Sends Record 42 Teams on 142nm Coastal Race

The 2022 West Coast Offshore Racing Season kicks off with the 142nm race from Point Fermin, around Catalina and San Clemente Islands to the finish in San Diego February 25-26. Co-hosted by Newport Harbor Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club, the 13th edition of this annual race sets a new record with 42 entries competing in 6 ORR classes, 1 ORR-ez class, and a single multihull entry.

After a Zoom competitors meeting reaching sailors both on shore and on their boats on the way to the start line, Newport Harbor Yacht Club unveils their new Race Committee boat led by PRO Scott Mason. Starts are scheduled every 10 minutes fom 12:30 to 13:20 for the 8 classes racing.

2022 Women’s Winter Invitational Recap Video

It’s the middle of winter for most, but here in sunny San Diego, it’s 75 degrees every day. The San Diego Yacht Club knows exactly what to do with this formula and has been hosting the Women's Winter Invitational Regatta for the last 6 years and 2022 brought in an ever-growing interest from clubs and associations all across the US, including Hawaii and a team from Mexico. 24 teams were accepted to the slate and arrived for racing February 12-13th.


24 All Women Teams Compete at 2022 Women’s Winter Invitational

Twenty-four teams from around the US and Mexico made their way to San Diego this weekend for two days of competitive sailing in the 2022 Women’s Winter Invitational (WWI). Hosted by San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC), the J/22 regatta invites yacht clubs from all over the country to apply to send their best all-women teams for a series of racing in La Playa Cove. This year, over 80 talented women raced in a total of 58 races, but only one team took home the bragging rights for 1st overall. Coming from right down the I-5, California Yacht Club (Cal YC) sent team members familiar to the San Diego racing scene, Skipper Simone Staff and crew Beka Schiff and Melia Grasska.
