Nyenhuis Brothers Earn Bronze Medal at Youth Sailing World Championship

By Noah Nyenhuis | January 03, 2022

In December 2021, Ian and I had the chance to travel halfway around the world to a place we would never have thought we would travel to in order to participate in the Youth Sailing World Championships. The regatta was held in Mussanah, Oman in the Middle East and ran from December 11th to the 17th, 2021.

Our regatta started several days beforehand when we left our house to travel 36 hours to get to the venue. We drove to LAX and from there flew to Qatar, had an 8 hour layover and then flew on to Oman. It was quite confusing when we arrived due to the twelve hour time change and the fact that we had lost a day traveling. Luckily, we had a few days before the event to get used to the time change.

We hope we can answer all you questions and also give first time users and also old hands all the information they'll need for a comfortable and wonderful stay.

There will be some "required reading" for everyone who goes to BB such as the FAQ section and also what to expect and what not to expect from your Beachmaster who oversees the condition and cleanliness of our Outstation.

Please also read what is expected of you while at BB to make it safer and more pleasant for you, your guests, our neighbors and other SDYC members enjoying the beach.

We welcome your comments and suggestions and hope you enjoy your time at Buffalo Beach.

Episode 061 - Jim Madden

By Casey Allocco & Jared Wohlgemuth | December 29, 2021

Jim Madden, owner of the series of Stark Raving Mad boats, joins us this week on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast to talk about SRM, his search for a race boat, and traditions among his crew.

The episode starts with Jim telling host Alli Bell how he got started into sailing, following in the footsteps of his father in New York. He talks about the progression of boats he sailed as a kid before starting his big boat career in the Ranger 33. Jim tells the story of why he bought his Ranger 33 and the accident that he experienced many years ago, leaving him blind in one eye. The most recent Ranger 33 was the result of one of Jim’s goals to never give up despite his injury. “A nostalgia project,” he said.

United States SailGP Team punches ticket to Season 2 Grand Final

By Sail GP | December 29, 2021

A second-place finish at the Australia Sail Grand Prix presented by KPMG qualified the United States and event winner Australia, for the winner-take-all $1 million Season 2 Grand Final at the United States Sail Grand Prix San Francisco, March 26-27. The team includes two SDYC members: Jimmy Spithill and Andrew Campbell.

Per SailGP rules, only the top three overall teams at the end of the season will qualify for entry to the high-stakes, final race of the season.

Securing the team’s Grand Final berth sets up a dream comeback scenario for U.S. SailGP Team’s CEO and Driver Jimmy Spithill, who now looks to win sailing’s largest prize in front of the hometown, San Francisco crowd.
