Congratulations to Vince Brun on the Etchells Midwinters Victory

By | April 04, 2014

Racing at its Finest…

Three days of world class Etchells racing wrapped up last weekend with the "old pro", world champion and Ricardo Montalban/Dos Equis 'most interesting man in the world' look-alike, Vince Brun capturing the 2014 Etchells Midwinter West title. Congratulations to Vince, Rodney Hagerbals and Nick Martin (actually the real "chick magnet") on the 1227, Chowder. A big shout out to the SDYC Race Committee for running 3 days of excellent, crisp, no-nonsense racing (hardly time to have a sandwich between starts), the generous prize-giving hosted by Tom Carruthers of Point Loma Outfitting, and Fleet 13. Results here.

Speaking of Racing… GOOD LUCK to the SDYC 2014 Baldwin Cup team who will be racing in a super-competitive 4 on 4 team race at Newport Harbor YC this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Follow the action live at www.baldwincup.com. Go get 'em guys!

Commodore's Dinner April 8 @ 1800 @SDYC. Don't miss this… Over the next 2-3 years there will be lots of construction (aka pile driving) going on at "the neighbors house", Naval Base Point Loma. Come hear Capt. Scott Adams talk about the impact to SDYC and boaters as well as the 160 year history of this key military installation. Reservations here.

****** Opening Day 2014, SDYC's 129th Yachting Season ******

Saturday the 12th
1. Boat Inspection. This is a LONG standing Opening Day tradition at SDYC. Lots of fun, bragging rights and very nice bling on the line, enter your yacht (large or small) TODAY.

2. Opening Day Race. More bling and bragging rights are on the line for the always popular OD Race. We'll see you on the race track Saturday.

3. Opening Day Dinner Dance… Over 150 people have already made reservations – space is limited! Bottomless beer, wine too, are included with your dinner (no kidding) and a blast of a good time is guaranteed… have a look at the unreal menu, excellent band, "heart stopping" desserts, after dinner drinks, all at a ridiculous bargain. Put on the "expando pants" for this one --- you'll need 'em!

Sunday the 13th
1. Opening Day! Brunch (mise-well keep the "expando's" on!), Best Dressed Dock Competition (dock inspection at 0830 Sunday so get her dressed early), Boat Hospitality, bands, flags, pageantry, tradition and ceremony. The Opening Day ceremony begins promptly at 1200. Go to the website for all the details.

New Club Member - Prince Felipe Asturias of Spain
As mentioned briefly in the Commodore's column of the April Mainsheet, SDYC recently welcomed a new member, Prince Felipe Asturias of Spain. He is a very interesting man, perhaps one of the most interesting in the world. Here is a little more about the Prince…

Prince Felipe Asturias is an accomplished Soling sailor (6th in the Barcelona Olympics), bicycle enthusiast, surfer, skateboarder, water skier, scuba diver, rock climber, race car driver, dancer, wine connoisseur, musician, glider pilot, golfer, off road motorcycle rider, world class tri-athlete, kite boarder and snow boarder. Prince Felipe and family have adopted San Diego as a second home. The Prince said, "San Diego is the only place on earth where I can pursue my many outdoor sporting activities and still be home in time to enjoy a cold Dos Equis." That is interesting. We look forward to seeing the Prince around the Club. He recently purchased one of those tight, stylish SDYC cycle team jerseys from the Ships Store and has committed to start riding around town with other SDYC dignitaries. Welcome Felipe and family!

If you bought any of this, April Fools! But, the Soling sailor part all is true!

See you around the Club everybody.

Good sailing,

Chuck Sinks
