December 2002 Mainsheet PC News

By | December 01, 2002

This month, I am waaaaay behind on my “to do’s”. The weather has been beautiful and the winds just right. I have seen many of you out on the bay and it does my heart good to see the PC logo sail by.

The One Designs were held on November 3rd and we had a good turn out. The results were: #14, 66, 9, 62, 21, 44 and 54. It is good to see #14 back in great form after recent difficult years. Congratulations to Lee Estep and his new partner Peter Lawrence for a great showing as second!

Pete and Nancy Peckham hosted a party for Bud and MJ Caldwell as a send off before the Caldwells leave for New Zealand. Thanks to Troy Sears and the Peckhams for giving us a reason and place to celebrate. The food and drinks were terrific and the PC Fleet ALWAYS has some kind of reason to party! The night was lovely, the participants were having a good time. Knowing that it was a special event for Bud and MJ made the evening a terrific success!

Welcome to Pam and Max Phelps who are the proud owners of #44. Pam says they have not yet named the vessel and promises to let me know when she does.

I am still getting calls from people interested in becoming part of the PC fleet. I will remind readers that there are, presently, 9 boats available. Before you get ready to write that big check for $200.00, let me say that of the nine, most of these boats will require serious money to get them sailing. There is
only one boat that is in immediate sailing condition. She is located in Washington State and the owner will give her up for $4K if you arrange for her to be delivered or sailed down. She is NOT epoxied. The other boats are champions awaiting restoration, but this condition does not come without a price. I will gladly give details as to the other vessels, as each one has a different story behind her and I do not want to bore you with details now.

Lisa Jenkins, of the SDYC Sailing Office, has been kind enough to work with me in order to get a PC Web page link up and running. Though I have (seems, for years now) tried to do it on my own, there is simply never enough time in the day. Bruce Gresham (Events Online) and his crew has been very helpful in designing the site “Home Page” so I hope that Lisa and I can work together to make this a reality. It would be great to have a cyber collection of articles, photos and such to keep our fleet alive in cyberspace and available to those who are interested. Thanks to all of you who have generously donated photos and information enabling me to keep the history alive.

December will be a busy month for the fleet. In addition to club activities, there will be the Ancient Mariners ½ Pint of Rum Regatta on December 7th as well as our annual PC Christmas Pot Luck Party on December 14th. Our present Fleet Captain, Captain Dave Grundies has done a great job for and with the fleet. He and wife, Diane Schneider, have been long time PC sailors and I wish to thank them both for carrying the load throughout 2002. Captain Dave SWEARS TO ME that he sold the office of Fleet Captain to SC Gene Trepte for 2003! Lee Estepe has accepted the office of Secretary/Treasurer and our good friend and supporter Jack Sutphen will carry on as Race Committee Liaison. That was easy! Thanks to all of the above for stepping up to the plate and accepting the responsibility. Of course, we all know that Celeste and Jodie will be doing all the work, but it’s not like they haven’t been tricked into this kind of thing before!

With this, I will close the chapter for the 2002 PC articles. In a few days, we will all be sharing the holidays with friends and loved ones. As I have in the past, I would ask everyone to be reminded of the health, happiness and blessings we share. It is the season to show appreciation for those gifts, buy passing an unexpected kindness on to others who might not be as fortunate. Cissy and I wish you all a GREAT holiday season and 2003!

Good Sailing,

Rish Pavelec
