Happy New Year from Commodore Sinks

By | January 03, 2014

Happy New Year -

If you missed the NYE party, you missed a good one. Great band, excellent food, casino games, a (very popular) "scotch lounge" - loads of people, good friends, dancing and a great time had by all. The deck was literally rocking. Once again a big thanks to Marci Van Stee, Lori Martin and Lynn the chief organizers - and all the volunteers that helped make the Club look fabulous for NYE '13. Big thanks to the SDYC staff, especially Amy and Chef Darren and their teams, who made the night so much fun. I've already inked in "NYE at SDYC" on my 2014 calendar. You should too -- you won't want to miss it.

When the sun came up on New Year's Day at SDYC, the temperature quickly climbed to 70 degrees and a nice breeze began to build - epic San Diego sailing conditions. With a ripping ebb tide and the building breeze, the SDYC Race Committee started six classes in fantastic "winter" conditions. With the beautiful San Diego skyline as a backdrop, boats of all sizes were swapping tacks and gybes all over San Diego Bay. Big grins and "Happy New Year!" were seen and heard all across the race track. Thank you to Susi Graff and the Race Committee for the races. Results and photos are online.

Many SDYC junior sailors, with parents in tow, cut Christmas Day short and headed down to Miami, FL for the annual Orange Bowl regatta hosted by Coral Reef YC December 26-30th. As usual, SDYC Juniors finished up with some fantastic results. Not to be out done, the Rose Bowl regatta for college and high school sailors will be happening this weekend in Long Beach, CA. Sponsored by the USC sailing team, 26 collegiate sailing teams will join 63 of California's high school teams at the 29th running of the Rose Bowl regatta. High school and collegiate sailing are two areas of our sport experiencing robust growth - youth sailors love it and it's fun to watch! Keep an eye on SDYC-hosted high schools - Francis Parker, Cathedral Catholic, Bishops and Point Loma this weekend.

The San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Race is set to start in March. The race already has 21 very competitive entries with over a half dozen more boats indicating they will be joining the 1,100 mile downhill sleigh ride, finishing in balmy paradise on the Mexican Rivera. In conjunction with our friends from Acapulco Yacht Club, Race Chairman Steve Malowney and his PV Race organizers have put together a fantastic event. Even if you are not sailing, jump on a plane and join the fun in PV (view travel information). The PV race kick-off party on March 13th is another "cannot miss" event at SDYC.

Join us for the Commodore's Dinner Tuesday, January 14th. This month's speaker is Scott McGaugh from USS Midway Museum. Scott led the public relations campaign to bring the Midway to San Diego and has been part of her story ever since. He later became the Marketing Director of the USS Midway Museum and has served that role ever since. Midway is now the most visited floating museum in the world. Scott will share some of the Midway's history and give us a sneak peak at some of the activities planned for the 10-year celebration of the museum... including a sneak peak preview video of the Battle of Midway theater that will open this year. Register online.
