The Junior Sabot Nationals take place at Newport Harbor Yacht Club August 8-11, 2011.
SDYC had great success in the Monday Qualifying round, with most of the SDYC sailors making it to the next round. The Qualification Series winner was SDYC's Cole Harris, who won 3 of the 6 races he competed in.
On Tuesday in the Fligh Selection Round, Team SDYC continued with great finishes at the top of the leaderboard. Scott Sinks won 3 of 6 races to finish 1st overall, and Jack Ryan won 2 other races to finish 3rd overall.
Flight Selection Series Results
Wednesday kicked off the Championship Series which will conclude on Thursday. Team SDYC finished Wednesday with 3 top 10 sailors in the Gold Fleet, including Scott Sinks (4th), Jack Ryan (7th), and Zach Malcolm (10th). As John Reiter reported from NHYC, "Very difficult Newport conditions of light and shifty left locals in some top spots. In [the Silver Fleet] Johannes McElvain is in 2nd and Charlie Miller is in 4th. We have 3 in the top 10 of Gold but the throwout will really mess with the leaderboard and won't kick in until the last race! In other words the winner of Sabot Nats will likely not be known until the last weather mark on Thursday!"
On the last day of Junior Sabot Nationals, Thursday, August 11th, Joseph Hau of NHYC claims the championship in the Gold Fleet, followed by SDYC's Jack Ryan in 2nd place. Scott Sinks (4th) and Zach Malcolm (10th) were other SDYC top 10 finishers. In the Silver Fleet, Johannes McElvain (who sailed to 3rd place in the Etchells Worlds with Vince Brun earlier this summer) finished in 2nd place, and Charlie Miller in 6th. In the Bronze fleet, Grace McCarthy finished 3rd.
Congratulations Team SDYC!
