While East Coast boaters were preparing to winterize their boats, the SDYC cruising fleet members were stocking up on sunscreen to enjoy the October ‘cruise’ to La Playa Cove for a raft up in perfect San Diego weather! Co-captains Gregg and Terri Wickstrand and Martin and Cyndi Buser hosted a weekend packed with beautiful people and magnificent boats, all prepared to enjoy a weekend of relaxation and friendship.
The Cruise Captains kicked off the weekend on Friday evening with a Champaign and Caviar welcome celebration aboard Gratitude (OK, it was Sparkling Wine and Crackers), then off to dinner at the club in a reserved deck section just for the Cruising Fleet members. Originally planned for 30 to dine, the dining crew, including Tammy and Gabi, flexed our assigned area to expand to 45 participants as more CF members were spontaneously welcomed to join in on the fun! As usual, the Club’s food, drinks and ambiance created a festive atmosphere for all to enjoy the evening.
Saturday saw 70+ degree mild Santa-Ana weather with members participating in stand-up paddling, kayaking, tennis, relaxing and occasional outbreak of cocktail parties aboard several of the cruising boats, most notably, the Houston’s Occasional Peace. Some members walked the ‘stern planks’ between boats while other members joined by dinghy to join the festivities throughout the day.
Saturday evening was celebrated at Old Venice Restaurant, where 37 members joined a beautiful dinner al fresco with roaring conversation. The evening was capped by the first annual weekend awards and raffle. Awards were given to Lance Murphy for Best Technical Assistance (You!...Throw out an anchor!), Mike Hinkley to Best Rafting Maneuver (Rafting between two boats with a strong beam wind) and to Glen Baker for Interesting Burgee Issues!
Sunday morning started with (no calorie) donuts and coffee served to each yacht. The day was so beautiful, members had difficulty leaving our snug moorings to return to normal life. But all good trips do end, as we ‘journeyed’ home full of good memories and fun stories while looking forward to the next event! Thanks to all members for attending!
