Sailing Tips from Junior Sailors

Shone Bowman, Jake Reynolds & Austin Dias put together a few tips for sailing a C420.  Visit the Junior Sailing Tips page for more videos like the one below.

C420 Breezy Transitions

Take note of how the team slowly transitions to hike, recognizes that they cannot keep the boat flat and immediately transitions to the trap, all while keeping the boat flat and fast. Anticipating puffs is extremely important and something for a team to work on together. Recognize that in a large puff, both team members will have to make sail trim, body weight and steering adjustments and communicate accordingly.

Note how the skipper anticipates the coming puff and pulls on vang sheet while the crew lowers on the wire. These two adjustments are extremely important to the subsequent inverse main pump and leech pop. Without proper vang and a low crew, the pop to release breeze from the top of the sail is useless. Furthermore, note how drastic the pop is when executed. This move allows the team to force the boat onto a plane. Accompanied with a slight footing angle, this works extremely well. Finally, take into consideration how much both skipper and crew are using their body weight to both steer the boat and keep it moving through wave-sets.
