First, for all my friends out there, this is your ONE WEEK warning – don't be OCS or "black flagged" by forgetting your "best girl" or "best guy" on Valentines Day. Make it easy. Just contact the Dining Room at (619) 758-6314 or make an online reservation request - viola, reservations for V-Day dinner at SDYC are done! You're welcome. Remember, this piece of relationship counseling and good friendship is expensive. Bobby and Winston at the bar know my favorite…
All those people standing on their heads with legs sticking out of their small boats in the boat park have not lost it. They are just Snipe sailors tinkering with and preparing their steed for the three day the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship Qualifiers this weekend. The Snipe Class mantra "Serious Sailing, Serious Fun" will probably be tilted a little towards the former this weekend as about 20 teams are expected to compete for just a couple of spots to represent the USA at "the big show," the WH&O Championship, hosted by SDYC in September. Snipe sailors have been known to do some crazy things in the past, like sail for 24 hours around an island and hoist pieces of sailing equipment and "petite clothing" up flag poles (there will be none of that!), but this weekend I think we're safe that standing on one's head while rigging a Snipe in the boat park will be the extent of the chicanery. Please join me in welcoming the Snipe sailors to the Club.
The U.S. Sailing Leadership Forum is officially underway at the Hilton Hotel, Mission Bay. Leading up to the Forum there has been a flurry of activity at the Club, with various U.S. Sailing certification programs being held as sailors from across the country are flocking to San Diego to escape the cold and attend the Forum. SDYC will be well represented at the Forum with over 15 members participating in various capacities, with many presenting at the conference.
Concurrent with the U.S. Sailing Leadership Forum is the ICOYC North American Conference at SDYC on Sunday. Flag Officers and other leaders from the finest yacht clubs in North America will be meeting at SDYC on Sunday to prepare for the World Conference in New Zealand later this fall. A welcome reception on Saturday evening and wrap-up dinner on Sunday evening will bookend the meeting. Huge thanks to Director Jerelyn Biehl and R/C Doug Werner who are on point to host our guests. Blowing kisses to Lynn Sinks and Lisa Reiter for hosting the spouses. Please extend a warm SDYC welcome to our fellow yachtsmen and women from the ICOYC.
On February 6th, U.S. Sailing will host an awards dinner at the Hall of Champions. SDYC will be recognized as the 2013 One Design Yacht Club of the Year at the dinner. Can't wait to plant that award in our lobby. Congrats to our great Club!
MOST IMPORTANTLY… election day is February 11th for Mayor of San Diego. This is an important election for our fine City and our great Club. We are all fortunate to live in a country where our voice can be heard at the Polls. A good friend and fellow member is on the ballot. Please vote on Tuesday.
