Many readers will remember that this past July, our club sponsored the 70th PC Nationals! There are few One Design classes in the world that can boast of having not only survived that long, but have experienced a recent resurgence!

Our fleet had two days of great racing with 8-11 K S-SW winds allowing for 5 excellent races (with one throw-out). There were 13 boats at the line, representing 3 yacht clubs and two local marinas. Special thanks to Sandy Horowitz, #43, who trailered down from the California YC to join us. Sandy has made repeated attempts to join our activities in the past. He and his crew are always welcomed at our PC events. There is talk in the gossip mill of the possibility of the LA area fleet keeping a boat down here is San Diego so that members of the Marina Del Rey/LA fleets could fly or drive down to join in our monthly events without worrying about getting a boat down here. Wouldn’t that be great! We will keep our fingers crossed that Sandy and others can put this plan together.

The winners of the regatta were:

1st Jack Sutphen #62
2nd Blake Oversmith #27
3rd Pam Lindley #14

Congratulations to you all!

After MANY years and as many headaches, it was good to see LA CUCARACHA on the water and sailing. I would say that this is a terrific showing for #14 and we should expect to see her in the mix regularly now that she has been restored. Welcome to Jeeves Kenny who became a partner recently! I would be remiss if I did not thank Jim Person and his race committee crew who did their usual great job. People on the race committee devote HOURS of care, concern and effort to our events and we want them all to know just how much we appreciate their devotion to making these enjoyable races possible. Another “thank you” should go to the SDYC office Manager, Irmgard Ryan, who rushed to arrange for the awards and prizes. Due to a series of unexpected events, we found it necessary to deal with many things at the last minute. Irmgard came to the rescue! Ron and Lynn Render, #54, did a superb job of hosting our Saturday evening social event. Thank you both for a job well done!

While Cissy and I did not race this year, we had the pleasure of watching the first race on Saturday. PUFF seemed to sail a bit better with experienced PC skipper and SDYC member, Scofield Bonnet at the helm. In next month’s article, I will give you more details about “Sco” who was the first owner of #16 DAWN in 1937, and I will tell you about our day out on the water with him. Lastly, I am searching for to running backstay cars for the #8 WINGS restoration. Those interested can see the progress at Koehler Kraft. As I have told you, all the floor timbers, ribs, planking, deck beams and deck have been strengthened and finished. While the yard works on the cabin and interior, I am getting all the deck hardware ready. I am still looking for the starboard chock and the running backstay cars. Anyone with old hardware or suggestions as to where to find them can contact me.

To those fleet members who seemed to have “swallowed the anchor”… we miss seeing you out on the water! Come out and enjoy the fun!

Until next time,

Rish Pavelec
