Summer Time at SDYC

By | May 30, 2014

One more time… Give this link a click ("Sunny and 75") and have a listen to this Joe Nichols tune while reading today’s SDYC e-blast. When you’re done, close the laptop, cancel the meeting and ditch the suit. Slip on the shorts, flip flops, golf shirt and ball cap and head down to the Club. Grab your favorite summertime libation from a friendly SDYC server – have a seat on the deck, then soak in a long Friday afternoon as only we can in So Cal. I’ll see you there.

Beer Cans are off and running… no doubt about it… it’s summer

Q: How do San Diego sailors squeeze in an extra "half weekend day" during the summer?
A: BEER CAN RACING
BEER CANS = 10 Wednesday evening races, 125 boats, 500+ sailors, 10 classes, 50 SD Bay course options, 10 after race parties, 10 Beer Can BBQ's, 1,000 lies/rumors/stories told in the bar, 500 Mt. Gay hats, 100's of pretty girls, 100's of "iffy" guys, tons of fun and 1 beautiful San Diego skyline.

That is some serious mid-week fun. Get on a boat, get out there and be a part of a 35-year San Diego tradition.

Buffalo chips – Buffalo burgers – Buffalo Beach

The Annual Buffalo Beach "Bash" is in the books. A good time was had by all. Great raffle prizes, good food, amazing "art" by Jim Dorsey and a some important funds raised for the outstation. Big thanks to Cathy Cibit. The BB Work party went off May 4-9. BB Chair Scott Launey reports a long list of projects were completed at the Catalina outstation and the Beach is ready for the summertime crush. Word is, our new Beachmaster Nate Porter knows what he is in for… we'll check back with Nate in September!

A+ on Final Exam for PLHS

The PLHS Sailing Team, led by coach Steve Hunt, added 2014 to their 2013 and 2012 national high school team race (3 on 3) championship titles for the Toby Baker Trophy. The action took place this past weekend at Lakewood Yacht Club in Houston, TX against 11 of the top high school teams in the country. The Pointers – with SDYC Junior Program sailors up and down the line up – had their hands full all weekend but had enough in the tank to fend of a late regatta charge by Annapolis High School. The PLHS Sailing Team was just coming off an exhilarating win at the high school Mallory double-handed national championship May 10-11, hosted by SDYC. Back-to-back HS national championships in the same year is amazing. Couple that with a '12, '13, '14 win streak at the Baker and a Pointer silver medal at the 2014 single-handed HS Cressy championship last fall… Wow! 2014 was quite a year! Congrats Pointers! Full article and results.

High school sailing nationwide is growing by leaps and bounds.  Boys and girls compete on a level playing field. Really cool. 460+ schools now have teams. These kids have a blast and it is fun to watch! Cathedral Catholic, Francis Parker, Bishops and PLHS Sailing Teams all call SDYC home. Each are excellent teams. Get involved – contact Junior Director John Fretwell today for details.

Top of the Class - College Sailing

Go to College Sailing Nationals to follow the collegiate championships beginning this weekend. Watch your favorite college team and SDYC Junior Program alumni sailor at the College Women's, Team Race and Co-ed Dinghy Championships. Good luck all.

Semi-Annual Meeting of the Members – June 9th

On Monday, June 9th, we will be holding our Semi-Annual Meeting of the Membership at 1900 hours in the Main Dining Room. We hope to see you there.  Along with general business updates, your Board will be asking the membership to support three Bylaw changes; increasing the number of Junior members (<21 years old), reducing dues, initiation fees and F&B minimums for Junior Flag members to help invigorate and attract  younger (<27 years old), active and engaged members to our Club. This 21 to 30 year old demographic is so critical to the future of our Club. In the past five years we have actually lost members in this category. Keep an eye out for the Notice of the Semi-Annual Meeting and the details of the proposed Bylaw changes arriving in your snail mail in the coming days.

4th of July at SDYC – Parades, Parties and a PURSUIT RACE:

Niza Brown and Becca Rumsey have been scheming for months now  planning the mother of all 4th of July celebrations. Don't miss it. Have a look at your Mainsheet arriving in your mailbox soon for a schedule of events over the three-day weekend.

Something new this 4th, a 4th of July Race -- a pursuit start and race down SD Bay returning to finish at SDYC. Just like our forefathers, the plan is to start and finish the 4th of July Race just in front of the finest Yacht Club on the planet. The 4th of July Race fleet is limited to just 40 boats with a minimum LOA of 12' and maximum LOA of 40'. Go to the link for the NOR and register today – space is limited!

Love that Joe Nichols summertime tune. Hope you did too. We'll see you around the Club.

Good sailing,
