Women’s Luncheons Moving to Wednesdays

By | February 11, 2013

SDYC’s Women’s Luncheons will be held on Wednesdays beginning in March.  We hope our change in schedule will allow more ladies to join us.  We have an exciting year planned.

Our March Luncheon will be on Wednesday, March 6th.  We have a great program planned with our own SDYC Master Gardeners discussing Sustainable and Edible Landscaping.

Register for the March Luncheon online.

Did you know that SDYC membership includes 7 UC Master Gardeners?  We will meet these dedicated volunteers, hear the latest information on sustainable and edible landscaping and ask our most pressing questions about gardening and landscaping.

Lynlee Slayter will explain how SDYC changed to sustainable maintenance practices and why these methods are so beneficial, resulting in earth friendly gardens.  Nancy Hurlburt will present the latest University of California principals of Edible Landscaping.

A panel of Master Gardeners will be available before and after lunch to answer your horticultural questions.  Panel members will be Lynlee Slayter, Nancy Hurlburt, Lois Kenneally, Karan Greenwald, Hannah Richardson, Julie Hasl, Tracy Ketron, Cindy Sparks, and In Memoriam:  Denise Holcombe.

Our February luncheon was another wonderful event.  Shirley Fishman from La Jolla Playhouse entertained us with the rich history of the Playhouse -- from its origins in the La Jolla High School auditorium, with folding chairs brought in for the audience, to its robust status today on the UCSD campus.  The Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, who was born and raised in San Diego, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer.  Initially the Playhouse ran during the summer and attracted Hollywood and stage stars on hiatus from their film or stage productions.

Today the Playhouse pursues a year-round production schedule.  Shirley shared the mission of the La Jolla Playhouse is to provide “unfettered creative opportunities for the leading artists of today and tomorrow.  With our youthful spirit and eclectic, artist-driven approach we will continue to cultivate a local and national following with an insatiable appetite for audacious and diverse work.”  The work they are doing is impressive, resulting in more than 300 major honors, including thirty-five Tony Awards for productions that have gone on to Broadway.

Bravo to La Jolla Playhouse!  It has grown from its humble beginnings as a small community theater to be the world-class theater it is today, with three separate theater venues and many award-winning productions.  How lucky we are to have such an accomplished and renowned theater in San Diego!

And, La Jolla Playhouse donated more than a dozen items for our raffles in support of Operation: Holiday Helping Hand.  Last year the Women’s Luncheon raffles contributed about $5000 to O:HHH.  Thank you for your support!

Hope to see you in March!
