Episode 054 - Bob Vincent

Bob Vincent joins us this week on the SDYC Sailcast with an episode full of stories and volunteerism. Bob talks about his involvement with ARG, the Runabout Fleet, Buffalo Beach and the Support Docks. 

The episode starts with Bob telling Host Alli Bell about his childhood in Mississippi sailing Sunfish and Skiffs. He talks about his time in the Navy, seeing the world through his time on aircraft carriers and always looking for opportunities to get on a boat. 


Streaming America’s Cup Events in the US

The 2021 America's Cup is approaching with lead-in and qualifying challenge events preceding the final America's Cup series. Limited methods for streaming the racing are available in the US. Episode 053 - Cory Sertl

Cory Sertl, President of US Sailing, joins us on the SDYC Sailcast to talk about US Sailing, World Sailing, equality in the sport, and her experiences sailing through the years.

The conversation begins with Cory and host Alli Bell discussing how Cory began sailing, starting in Rhode Island sailing Blue Jays. From there, Cory joined the University of Pennsylvania where she sailed against good friend Mary Brigden Snow from the Naval Academy. After college, Cory moved to Annapolis where she started a business selling sailing gear. Thats where she met her teammate Susan Deardorff who she sailed the 470 with. 


New Bison to Join Catalina Island Herd

Catalina’s wildlands are a portal to exploring historic California

Avalon, Calif. – Bison have played a significant role in the cultural heritage of Catalina Island for nearly 100 years and will be roaming Catalina Island far into the future. Catalina Island Conservancy is working with the Laramie Foothills Bison Conservation Herd to bring two pregnant female bison to Catalina Island. The new additions will arrive in early December and supplement the genetic diversity of the current bison herd on Catalina Island with the valuable genetics of heritage bison.

Finn Sailor and multi-time National Champion Darrell Peck joins us on the San Diego Yacht Club Sailcast to talk about his involvement in the Finn fleet, his successes through the past couple of decades, and the future of his time in the Finn. 

The conversation starts, as always, with Darrell explaining how he started sailing, including growing up in Rhode Island at his grandparents seasonal sailing school in Riverside, RI. He tells stories of his car accident changing his sailing routine along with outgrowing the Laser and hopping into the Finn. 


Updated Recreational Boating News

Finally, San Diego County has eased the restrictive guidance for recreational boating, now allowing crew from different households to be onboard. The new requirement, however, is to wear masks if within 6’ of one another while aboard, and while ‘down below’. That guidance can be found at: SD County Covid Guidance and scrolling down to “Outdoor recreation”, and clicking on “Boating” you will find…

Recreational boating on the ocean, bays and lakes is allowed under state guidance for outdoor recreation and the local Safe Opening Protocol for Recreational Boating. Operators of boats at any of those locations may have more restrictive guidance.” Click on Safe Opening Protocol above to see the actual wording.  Events for San Diego Yacht Club will follow these protocols, as well as similar guidance for any activity ashore at San Diego Yacht Club.
