Finn Class Summer Sailing at SDYC

By Mike Dorgan | August 13, 2020

In August, the Finn Fleet suited up for the 2020 Olympic Classes Regatta with (17) Finns on the line from as far away as Missouri and all corners of the West Coast. Sailing conditions were ideal for the Finn class with 6 of the 7 races sailed with the "O" Flag up allowing for unlimited free-pumping downwind. SDYC staff, RC, and volunteers did an excellent job of launching the fleets in pre-determined time slots allowing for plenty of 'social distancing' and a no-wait launching and retrieving times making for very efficient time use.

Kimball Livingston joins us on the SDYC Sailcast this week to talk about his involvement in improving junior sailing, his experiences in photo journalism, the One Ton class, Transpac and what he’s doing now. He is seen here with John DeRuff, captain of the sailing team at George Washington University.

“One of the big problems nationally is…the difficulty of keeping tweens engaged in sailing,” he says.

Three Singlehanded Classes Featured at San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta

By Casey Allocco, SDYC Communications Coordinator | August 09, 2020

Over 80 single-handed boats sailed in the San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta (SDOCR) this weekend at the San Diego Yacht Club, a regatta that for most was the first opportunity to compete in months. Lasers, Laser Radials, and Finns made way to two separate ocean courses where they “socially distance” sailed in boat lengths for seven races. In an effort to provide sailors with a venue for them to compete in international, high-level classes, the SDOCR was home for sailors of all ages and experience levels.

In the Laser fleet, Ford McCann took first with 7 points, Marshall McCann took second with 10 points, and Paul Didham took third with 19 points.

In the Finn fleet, legend Finn-sailor Henry Sprague took first with 7 points, Michael Dorgan finished second with 11 points, and Scott Griffiths followed in third with 22 points.

In the Laser Radial fleet, Nathan Sih won first with 10 points, followed by Morgan Pinckney in second with 14 points and Santiago Quiroga in third with 22 points.

Alice Schmid’s Adventure Sailing the Gorge

By Alice Schmid | August 04, 2020

It has been a long summer with no regattas because of Covid-19. So we jumped on the chance to travel north to the Columbia Gorge Racing Association One Design event at the end of July.  We were excited to race the “Gorge” but a little nervous about the windy, wavy conditions the venue is famous for..

Like many double handed teams I have had to change plans this summer and shift into single handed boats. Like most other juniors I turned to lasers and have been sailing them for about two months. Thanks to SDYC’s great laser coaches, including head coach Bryan Paine, we have all not only become comfortable in the boat but are also beginning to become a team that continues to push one another. Despite our limited experience in heavy winds, my brother Calvin, our friend Dylan Gardner, and I were set on making the 21 hour drive up to a regatta. So we loaded our boats and hit the road.

Episode 049 - Sharon Green

By Casey Allocco & Jared Wohlgemuth | July 27, 2020

Photographer Sharon Green joins us on the SDYC Sailcast to talk about how she got started in photography, her path to success and adventures she’s been on for the perfect photos.

Sharon grew up sailing on Lake Ontario and admired photography in high school where she would work on black and white photos in the dark room, she explained. From there, she continued her photography at Banff Art School. She began taking photos of Evergreen, and talks about how the builders of the boar wanted to buy the poster - completing her first sale.

From there, Sharon explains how Lowell North asked her to process photos, and she goes into detail on her experiences with Evergreen, including the Canada’s Cup. After seeing success, she decided to start her own business.
