Jim Cunningham’s Lifted Wins Etchells Midwinters West

By Casey Allocco, SDYC Communications Coordinator | April 13, 2022

The conclusion of the Etchells Midwinters West this weekend means only one more regatta in the Etchells West Coast Spring Series... and the top overall positions are a close call. Jim Cunningham on Lifted earned a first place win this weekend after staying consistently in the top three for the previous two races in the Series. However, Cunningham and his crew are unable to sail in the final event, the Orca Bowl, leaving the battle between Chris Busch's Elizabeth and Tom Carruthers' Louise for the overall Series winners.

Maggie Fleming at the C420 Midwinters

By Maggie Fleming | April 08, 2022

2022 C420 Midwinters in Jensen BeachWith conditions ranging from windy, stormy, and wet to warm, sunny, and light, this years C420 Midwinters Championship was extremely challenging and competitive. My skipper Emily and I never seemed to have a moment to relax, whether it be staying upright between races on the first day, or fighting for a spot on the line the next. The current was ripping from boat to pin, and the pressure could be quite unpredictable. The right often paid, so we usually set up near the boat in hopes that there would be an opportunity to tack once we sailed up course into the shallower water.  It was a great experience, and congrats to Peter Busch and Cam Spriggs for getting second place! SoCal crushed it, taking up many of the spots in the top 10!

2022 Buffalo Beach Season

By Dan Payne, SDYC Beachmaster | April 08, 2022

Members are discouraged from bringing:

  • Firewood: There will be ample firewood on hand for the entire season
  • Bottled water: our camps filter system provides the purest water available. Plastic bottles put pressure on our already over burdened landfill capacity. Lighten your travel load. There is no need to carry any here.

Dogs are still welcome at Buffalo Beach. Catalina Conservancy And San Diego Yacht Club rules insist that all dogs remain leashed while on Catalina Island. Dogs must be cleaned up after immediately. Uncontrolled barking will not be permitted (by dogs or owners). There is no exception to the doggie rules. Comply, or owner will be asked to leave. The dog can stay.

Neighboring Camps: by no means are we welcome to trespass on our neighboring camps property. Our immediate neighbor, MSA, operates as a youth camp and Airbnb. Adults found wondering through the camp while youth groups are present could face criminal charges. While passing through the camp you must stay on the road. We are not welcome to use their restrooms, showers, or playground facility. There is a small store within MSA’s main building which we may patronize.

Jumping from the pier is strictly prohibited. Our host, the Catalina Conservancy insists that no member or guest jump from the pier at any time for any circumstance.
It is dangerous, and against Los Angeles County code, punishable by fines from $100-$500, and/or 30 days in L.A. County Correctional Facility (Avalon).

Trash is picked up at your boat every Saturday and Sunday morning. Simply leave your trash on the swim platform and it will be picked up. You may drop your trash at the Green Pier in Avalon FOR FREE. Trash from boats may not be brought ashore. There is no exception to this rule. We have no resources or facility to handle outside trash. Members who violate this rule will find their account charged the cost of this service at $35.00 per bag.

Team Palaemon Wins ORC and Overall Title At San Diego Stunner

By Dave Reed, Sailing World | March 29, 2022

On a perfect day for racing in San Diego, multiple champions were crowned at the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series stop, with the ORC winner taking the big prize.

The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series San Diego finished just as it started—with brilliant sunshine and a building sea breeze, conditions that local sailors expect this time of year. The ideal racing conditions also allowed the race committees of San Diego and Coronado yacht clubs to complete a full set of races over the three-day regatta.

For Eduardo Saenz and his teammates on Nimbus, the three-race final day gave them an opportunity to put up a few more top finishes and win their regatta by a considerable 12-point margin over Jeff Janov’s Minor Threat. For Saenz and his teammates from Mexico City, Mexico, the key was working the wind shifts and, of course, staying out of trouble.
